I have to say this was highly amusing yesterday. Joke Minister Michael McDowell claiming that 'new intelligence had just been recieved'
Now i dont know how good the free state intelligence agencies are meant to be, but if they had read Micheal Stones Auto-biography published 3 years ago they would be aware of it. Stone says a leading UVF commander told him all about the plot at the 1981 Ard Fheis. The bomb was placed in a Fire extinguisher to the left hand side of the stage.
It failed to explode and the UVF assumed either the free state army or the sinn fein secuity had located it.
Bravo Micheal, we now know you own a library card you muppet![]()

Its been in public domain since Stone released his book in 2003, he even tells which fire extinguisher the Power Gel bomb was hidden in.
In fairness i would hope that Mansion house would have changed its fire extinguishers in the last 25 years.

the use of the word Free state makes me feel I've accidentaly slipped onto some Republican Socialist message board
I don't see what's offensive about calling the 26 county state the Free State. Loyalists and Unionists sometimes call it the Free State too.
The term 'free state' wud be used more commonly than anything else to describe the south from up here. Its always been called that and its not an attempt at a wind up. Very rarely would anyone say the republic, more likely to hear it called 'the south' or 'free state'.
Talk about throwing your toys out of the pram boys.

The official name of the state is "Ireland" or "Eire" according to Dev's constitution. But it wouldn't it be bit silly for a Northerner born and raised on the island of Ireland to call the 26 counties "Ireland".![]()
I refer to the island just as ireland, if im chattin about up here i say 'the north' and 'free state' for south. Its just what we say its not meant to be taken as anything.
next thing we wont be able to call bohs gypsies![]()

Sounds like a deliberately bigoted term to me. Don't use it on Foot.ie please.
expain to me why it is a bigoted term?
i find this amazing that the 26 counties finds the term free state insulting when its the original name for the administration.
I will continue to use the term free state as i do not see how it is bigoted in any way.
Can i insist that the term 'Northern Ireland' isnt used then as it insults me?

You can insist all you want, you don't set the rules around here. Guess who does?
The term "free state" is one the people of the six counties, particularly those in Tyrone and Derry, use for the "Republic of Ireland". It is used in a totally non-offensive way and I find it abhorent yet not at all surprising that Pete has threatened bans for its use.

Speranza, do you honestly think calling one of my moderators a liar is a good way to get your point across?
I live in the Republic, and I put the term "free state" in the same category as the use of the word "mainland". I don't like it. Obviously other people from the Republic don't like it or it wouldn't have been highlighted in this thread. You can use it all you like, but you won't use it on Foot.ie, understand?
And yes, if you continue to behave in the way you're behaving now, you will be banned.

If a moderator behaves in a way that is underhand then they deserve to be pulled up about it. I would never waste my time trying to wind someone of Pete's nature up.
You say I will be banned for "continuing to behave in the way I am now" but my behaviour is not the issue. The issue is the use of the word Free State, a word which I will NEVER EVER stop using. BTW You have failed to address the issue of the word "Northern Ireland"
"Understand?" who do you think you are mate? I understand that you won't be telling me what to do and before you bore us all with another angry tirade Adam I shall close my username and account immediately. Over the last few years I have laughed continually at how your behaviour resembles that of a playground bully, effectively "If you don't like it FU*K OFF". IMO you are a very sad individual who's only source of authority and respect in the world comes from despotic running of a forum - what a sad situation for a grown man to be in. Get a hobby, some friends even, you sad *****!
Before you post your witty retort - I have seen you do it before and to be honest you're not the funniest so spare us and don't bother with the "thank God you're gone" nonsense too! Bye now

What was that about angry tirades?
So in you we have someone that's unwilling or unable to compromise or even accept that some people don't like the language that you use, someone that flies into a temper at the slightest provocation, someone that attacks people personally when you can't defend your argument, someone that flounces off afterwards in a bizarre belief that it'll be a major loss to everyone, and someone that has zero respect for authority.
Yeah, you're a real loss to the site.
Strabane Harp, perhaps you'll be more inclined to discuss rather than huff and puff and blow my house in: Can you not see that some people view the use of the phrase as a deliberate attempt to wind up your (hopefully former) "foes" in the community, and prefer not to see that happening?

I have deliberately stayed out of this debate so as not to prolong. If you look at the tone of the original post in the thread i think you can see the deliberate wind up nature.
I can't ever remember anyone saying i used NI in an offensive manner. If that is the case then i only use as its the official term for the north of this island. I think 6 counties & Ulster woud only offend one side or the other...
I don't see what's wrong with the term "Free State". That's what the Irish state was known as originally. Older generations over the age of 60 often refer to it as that. I think it would be more offensive if he called the "Southern State" (which strangely has the most northern county in Ireland in it) "the collaborationist 26 county state".![]()
If some people had their way they reintroduce Section 31. We can't let the Provos have freedom of speech because we'll all be brainwashed in to joining the IRA.![]()
As has been explained at least twice, the issue is with usage, not use.
