The recent bouts of rain provided a slick surface at the LPR Sports Ground for this afternoon's encounter with Exeter City SC. The conditions suited the playing style of RISSC (London) and they produced an excellent performance.

With skipper Karl McGee delayed on his journey to the ground, regular right back Mark O'Connor switched to central defence with the evergreen Paddy McGee filling in at full back for his first start of the league campaign. The position offered no real problem to the versatile McGee who proceeded to have an excellent game.

RISSC opened proceedings in confident fashion and stroked the ball around with aplomb. Their reward was swift in arriving with last season's leading scorer and player of the year Mick Coffey converting an early opportunity. As the half progressed RISSC swept into a two goal lead with Coffey again on target. With the half time whistle approaching, RISSC received a jolt to their confidence when the visitors reduced arrears with a soft goal.

Any concerns the RISSC players may have had, were banished immediately upon the resumption when Mick Coffey cut in from the right and fired a shot which was deflected into the Exeter net by one of their defenders. Shortly afterwards, RISSC entered the comfort zone when a free kick around the half way line was struck with venom by Paddy McGee and sailed straight into the Exeter net. With RISSC now totally in command, recent signing Ritchie Dempsey sprung to the fore and the Laoisman plundered a late hat trick with three superbly crafted individual efforts.

This result provides RISSC with an opportune filip and manager Paul Franklin and his squad will look forward to continuing this vein of form for the continuation of the season. Next up on the fixture schedule is the trip to face Birmingham City SC on Sunday next 8 October 2006.

RISSC help to raise spirits...08/10/2006

The RISSC (London) football team played with pride and passion to overcome Birmingham City SC in the APFSCIL League division one this afternoon. Despite playing for the great majority of the game with ten men, following the early dismissal of Brian Moriarty, the team delivered an emphatic 4 nil victory to revive some Irish spirits, low from yesterday's Nicosia debacle.

Victory was sweet revenge for the early season defeat by the 'Potters'. The success moves RISSC to within one point of new joint leaders Norwich City SC and Aberdeen SC. Report to follow

RISSC (London) avenged their early season defeat by Stoke City SC in an absorbing encounter at the LPR Sports Ground this afternoon. The ‘Potters’ entered the game on a high, having won their opening three fixtures, to top the League. Among those early successes was an emphatic 6-2 defeat of an under strength RISSC.

RISSC were without regular custodian Darren Nolan who was allegedly spinning a wheel or two in Las Vegas, while looking for Elvis. Tim Nagle deputised for the absent Nolan between the posts. Manager Paul Franklin had most of his squad available and was able to field, arguably, his strongest side this season. Still smarting from their earlier defeat, the RISSC players were quickly out of the blocks, displaying an eager appetite for action.

The match ebbed and flowed, as Stoke are a redoubtable outfit and were not prepared to concede readily. Their primary striker, who had caused mayhem in the RISSC defence during the first meeting, was the subject of special attention and encountered skipper Karl McGee at his belligerent best. As time elapsed, RISSC began to edge proceedings but were caught cold when an in swinging corner was allowed to drift directly into the net.

The disappointment of conceding such a soft goal was swiftly cast aside and RISSC began to make inroads into the Stoke defence. Strike partners Mick Coffey and Richie Dempsey both went close as the interval approached. RISSC suffered a setback five minutes before the break when Mark O’Connor had to be replaced and Paul Lavelle entered the fray.

Wind conditions favoured RISSC after the resumption and aligned to the industry of all the players they began to take a firm hold on proceedings. The deserved equaliser came as no surprise when Dempsey slipped through the Stoke defence and scored with ease. Buoyed by his goal, the Laois man continued to create panic in the Stoke defence, and his sharp reactions brought further joy as his well struck shot gave RISSC the lead.

The opportunity to seal the victory fell to Brian Moriarty but his effort came back off the post and was cleared. Credit must be given to Stoke who showed a large degree of resilience and were rewarded with an equaliser, again from a set piece corner. On this occasion the cross was met on the full by a Stoke player and powered to the net.

RISSC responded to this setback with renewed ambition and Dempsey’s long range free kick struck the bar and flew over. Undaunted, the team continued to press the opposition and justice was done when a sublime piece of skill from Finton McKeon beat three opponents and his delicate pass found Dempsey who fired home the winner and his hat trick.

As the match approached the final stages, Stoke tried desperately to retrieve the situation but RISSC stood firm and resisted all their efforts with calm assurance. Indeed, RISSC came closest to scoring when another fine effort from Dempsey clipped the crossbar again. This victory, over a Stoke side who will challenge for the title, is crucial to the resurgence of RISSC and manager Franklin and his players believe that it can be the catalyst for another successful campaign.

RISSC will meet high flying Aberdeen SC at the LPR Sports Ground in what promises to be a titanic battle. The Scottish team has the League's most parsimonious defence, having conceded only four goals to date. RISSC, without midfield supremo Donnie Mullen, will have to pull out all the stops to obtain a result from this encounter..

After the unjust defeat at the hands of joint league leaders Aberdeen SC, LONDON RISSC bounced back last Sunday with a 3-2 win over Middlesbrough SC..

Middlesbrough SC, defeated by RISSC in the Dave Baistor Cup two weeks ago, made a swift return to the LPR Sports Ground for this APFSCIL Premier Division fixture. The resilient visitors faced a RISSC team shorn of seven squad members and stretched to the limit of their playing resources. The spirit and togetherness of the team was exemplified by flu stricken skipper Karl McGee, who despite feeling unwell, joined his team mates on the front line. Manager Paul Franklin was pleased to see the return of Mark O’Connor and Donnie Mullen, who both missed last weeks titanic encounter with league leaders Aberdeen SC. Also making his first start for some considerable time, was the perennial Paddy McGee.

The early stages of the contest were evenly matched with both sides showing cautious respect for each other following their recent tightly fought cup encounter. Ailing skipper McGee occupied the holding midfield role alongside Mullen and was prominent throughout the first half. Playing conditions were good for mid November and the match ebbed and flowed without any notable threat to either goal until a moment of controversy arose. An inswinging free kick from Mick Coffey flew goalwards and was clawed away by the goalkeeper with several of the RISSC players convinced it had crossed the line but the referee waved play on. Coffey’s strike partner Mauricio Carillo also went close with an effort which worried the goalkeeper.
The second half opened with Middlesbrough looking just a little bit sharper and they had the greater share of possession during the first ten minutes. Challenged by the increased vigour of the visitors, RISSC responded and took the lead through Mauricio. The striker latched on to a through ball and stroked it assuredly past the goalkeeper. The tempo of the game quickened and Middlesbrough fought their way back into the game and scored a deserved equaliser. The exchanges continued to be close and another delightful pass from Healy was despatched to the net by Karl McGee. The skipper’s delight was swiftly wiped out when the effort was ruled out for offside. The disappointment was further compounded minutes later, when poor defending resulted in Middlesbrough taking the lead.
An injury to Jon Carey forced manager Franklin to enter the fray with Brian Moriarty dropping into the left back position vacated by Carey. The changes did not disrupt the ambition of the team. From a position within his own half, Moriarty drove forward at the heart of the Middlesbrough defence and from some twenty five yards struck a powerful swerving shot which nestled in the back of the net. Both sides continued the search for the winning goal and with tiredness descending upon the players, openings began to materialise.
As the game entered the final stages, victory was secured for RISSC. Centre back Mick Cusack, who had soldiered on despite a heavy knock during the first half, broke from defence and drilled an angled pass towards Coffey. The alert striker dummied the pass, which allowed Karl McGee to break in behind the defence and drill a shot to the net. This time the goal stood and the elated captain celebrated in exuberant fashion. This excellent victory maintains the team’s fifth place position in the Premier League. Next up are Crewe SC again at the LPR Club this Sunday 2pm ko

After no game last Sunday due to adverse weather conditions, the London Boys in Green play London Scottish SC this Sunday 3rd December in the 1st rd proper of the Dave Baister Cup, at that well known West London Irish soccer venue Shamrock Sports Club, Acton ko 2pm .....................

The Dave Baistor Cup second round tie against London Scottish SC, which had fallen foul of weather conditions the previous week, went ahead at the LPR Sports Ground this afternoon. Conditions were far from ideal with a buffeting wind blowing straight down the pitch and RISSC were obliged to face the elements for the first half.

This dictated a policy of containment, with little opportunity to mount a coherent attacking alternative. The RISSC defence was equal to the challenge and succeeded in restricting the opposition to the occasional long range shot. The half passed without RISSC custodian Darren Nolan, really being troubled.

On the resumption, following the half time break, RISSC swiftly took control of matters and midfielder Donnie Mullen put them in front with a powerful twenty five yard shot which gave the Scottish goalkeeper no chance. While RISSC were comfortably in control, goal opportunities were rare until Mick Coffey converted a second goal midway through the half. The third and final goal came during the closing stages when Richie Dempsey latched on to a long clearance from Nolan to outpace the defence and tuck the ball in the back of the net.

The match was far from a classic, but the essence of cup football is to win and advance to the next stage of the competition. This target was achieved with comfort and the squad will now await the quarter-final draw with great interest.

Manager Paul Franklin and his squad travelled to the Civil Service Ground this afternoon for their first match since their Cup success against London Scottish SC on Sunday 10 December 2006. RISSC were without centre back and captain, Karl McGee who had not recovered from injury and leading goalscorer, Richie Dempsey. Mick Cusack and Adrian Ward were also unavailable but Franklin was pleased to welcome back Dave Hestor and Paul Lavelle for their first appearances of the season.

Weather conditions in South London were much improved from last week with bright rays of sunshine skipping across the crisp surface of the pitch. The players were eager to pick up where they had left off in 2006 and set about their task with early gusto. Their initial efforts were undermined somewhat by an understandable lack of sharpness, given the lengthy gap since they last took the field. Despite this general level of rustiness, a number of chances did fall the way of RISSC, but they all went begging.

This early dominance by RISSC received a jolt mid-way through the half when in their first serious assault on Darren Nolan’s domain, the home side took the lead. Defensive uncertainty in failing to deal with a through ball was punished to the full by Crewe. This RISSC outfit is an experienced squad, who have been in this position before and they responded with renewed vigour. A delightful through ball released midfielder Finton McKeon, as the home defence focused on Mick Coffey who, while in an offside position, was not interfering with play. Sadly, the redoubtable McKeon blazed his effort over the crossbar.

RISSC continued to persevere and received their merited reward ten minutes before the interval. Another through ball was latched onto by Mauricio Carrillo who maintained his composure and drove home a splendid equaliser. The Irish team continued to press their opponents throughout the remainder of the first half but Crewe defended with a resilience which belied their position at the foot of the league table.

The early second half exchanges continued in like fashion to the first with RISSC enjoying the bulk of possession while the home team mounted a stout rearguard action. Manager Franklin was beginning to show signs of concern that his team could not make the crucial breakthrough when on the hour mark, salvation arrived courtesy of the foot of Mick Coffey. The leading goalscorer and last season’s player-of-the-year fired RISSC in front with another of his thunderbolt efforts. RISSC sought to increase their lead and Donnie Mullen twice went close with headers while Brian Moriarty also had a near miss.

The final whistle confirmed victory for RISSC and the winning three points, keeps the team in the top-half of the league table. The outing will have gone some way towards building the kind of form and momentum that will be required as the season progresses. RISSC will meet current table toppers Norwich City SC at the LPR Sports Ground on Sunday next 21 January 2007 and will be seeking to avenge the shattering opening day defeat inflicted upon them by the 'Canaries'.
