    St Patrick's Athletic 7 Kildare County 3

KILDARE County's U21 team started life in the Eircom U21 League at the wrong end of a ten goal thriller at Baldonnell on Sunday.

The Thoroughbreds' young guns produced an excellent first half display but a period of dreadful play early in the second half undid all the good work.

It had all looked for promising when Mikey McCann linked with Damien Smyth to shoot Kildare ahead in the 12th minute with an excellent shot from the edge of the St Pats' penalty area.

Things started to go askew for Kildare just before the half-time whistle when Aidan O'Keeffe got in on the right side and drilled a stunning blast past County keeper Fred Davis to equalise.

St Pats got a real lifeline in the 52nd minute when Celbridge lad Cormac Ryan was judged to have fouled Supersaints winger Brian Byrne and referee Paul Tuite pointed to the spot for a penalty.

Sean Mannion converted the spot-kick and launched a three minute blitz that stunned the naive Kildare side.

Kevin Doyle made it 3-1 after a slipped pass by Byrne and before Davis could compose himself O'Keeffe and beaten the Kildare keeper again from close range after County let the ball bounce around their area.

Philip Hughes made it 5-1 with a brilliant chip over Davis on 58 and ten minutes later Doyle had forced home number six after a low pass by Mannion.

Kildare rallied late on with Barry Burke connecting with a McCann pass to fire home in the 80th minute and two minutes from time Ray Scully scored with a brilliant left foot shot after a 1-2 with McCann.

But just when it seemed County would walk off with a bit of pride restored, the referee awarded a controversial penalty to the home side after Davis appeared to have beaten Hughes to a through-ball. Mannion stepped up to make it 7-3.

KILDARE COUNTY - Fred Davis; Cormac Ryan, Kevin O'Donovan, Eoin Hetherington, Damien Coogan, Bryan Byrne, Ray Scully, Barry Burke, Mick Hartnett, Mikey McCann, Damien Smyth. Sub - Shane D'Arcy for Scully 89.
