Wireless broadband

I've had a broadband connection for the past while and I recently bought a laptop. I'm having problems getting the laptop to connect to the network. Everything is working fine, the laptop has found the wireless signal and is able to connect to it, but for some reason when I go into internet explorer it won't work, despite there being a connection made. Anyone know what the problem is?

Also, when I first set up the wireless modem it was working fine. Then when I went to configure my PC to work wireless neither would work

I had the same problem last year. Don't ask me how this worked, but, I disabled my ethernet adapter under system properties and presto! Then I re-engaged it and it worked fine from then on. Try it and see what happens. I'm not a techi, so you might want to wait for further advice!

How do you get to system properties?

Connect to the router and then click START RUN type "cmd" in the command prompt box type "ipconfig".

Post back what you see here.

I think your gateway IP and DHCP server are not set up right.

Into your web browser and login into the router tru the wireless.

What Router is it ?

The router is Linksys. What do you mean login? The wireless status says connected so is that alright?

your router is the gateway to the internet when you typed in ipconfig the gateway number must be your router, so if you type that ip into a browser you should see the linksys router login page.

Im guessing its not that Ip if your not seeing the login screen. When logged in you change router settings not important now as just seeing it is important.

Try 192.168.1.1 into your router you should see a webpage with login and password on it.

Got that far but can't get any further. Gave the username and password on the bottom of the router. Was that the right thing to use?

usually its admin and pass 1234

Your wireless card needs to know the routers IP as a gateway so assuming in CMD it says 192.168.1.254 but in reality its 192.168.1.1 (it should be this)

You need to force the gateway upon the wirelass card by doing the folowing.

go to START CONTROL PANEL NETWORK CONNECTIONS (right click on your Wireless card and click PROPERTIES, scroll down to INTERNET PROTOCOL TCP/IP, click PROPERTIES click USE the following address enter your GATEWAY (ie 192.168.1.1 or 254 whichever worked in browser,must be that one its your gateway to internet)Click apply and reboot pc and connect to wireless network.

/it may be needed that the 2 fields above GATEWAY need to be entered not sure of your Operating system guessing its XP home so enter ip as 192.168.1.2 and subnet mask as 255.255.255.0.

Didn't work. admin and 1234 didn't work either. It's asking for a network key now
