limerick must field outfield player in goal vs UCD

Blues forced to play cup clash with no keeper
    Wednesday, 23 August 2006 10:04

Limerick's first choice stopper Noel Mooney is one of three injured keepers

Limerick will have to play an outfield player in goal in Saturday's FAI Cup clash with UCD after the FAI yesterday turned down an appeal from the Shannonsiders to play goalkeeper Austin O'Neill.

The Blues appealed to the FAI to be allowed to play O'Neill, who was signed last Wednesday, which was outside the 14-day clearance rule to play in the cup.

However, the FAI confirmed that following careful consideration by their domestic committee that they had turned down the Shannonsiders' appeal.

O'Neill was signed to ease the goalkeeping crisis at the club with Noel Mooney (knee) and reserve keepers John Healy (back) and Seamus O'Regan (hip) all out injured.

The trio visited a doctor in Limerick on Monday night and medical certs confirming their injuries were supplied as part of Limerick's appeal.

But an FAI spokesman said that while they were aware of the exceptional nature of the appeal, that they could not facilitate Limerick's request.

He said: 'We were aware of the mitigating circumstances in this appeal by Limerick FC, but the rules must be upheld on this issue and that was the decision of our domestic committee.'

O'Neill, a former UCD keeper-made his debut for the Blues against Cobh Ramblers last weekend and saved a penalty inside the first five minutes.

Limerick may now play midfielder Tommy Barrett in goals against UCD. Barrett replaced Mooney between the sticks when the first choice keeper limped off against Kilkenny City 12 days ago.

the rules must be upheld on this issue

    yes rules are rules sometimes.

its harsh but i suppose its fair...think i might be betting on ucd this weekend!

Have to say, even though this makes things a lot easier for us, this is ******.

They were given special dispensation to sign a keeper and now they can't play him because they didn't give enough notice?! Utter rubbish. I hope that's overturned on appeal and we get to give abuse to Austin O'Neill... Also, it's utterly unfair on any Limerick fans travelling - and Lims fans in general, and indeed on UCD fans in general. People talk about games being ruined when a keeper gets sent off after five minutes - this is even stupider.

I don't mind too much. This is the kind of unfairness I can live with.

Seriously though, it's a stupid decision and should be overturned.

I think Belfield Park should find itself waterloged or otherwise unavailable for the next 14 days. If bot clubs agree, Limerick should be allowed to play the keeper.

If I get this straight, in the last 3 seasons Limerick will have fielded a goalkeeper as an outfielder and an outfielder as a goalkeeper.

Hey, we'll take any record we can get our hands on

Anyway, latest news is that John Healy will be "Relatively Fit" and should be able to limp on in goals for the 90 minutes.

Absolute shambles of a decision once again from the FAI

"harsh but I suppose it's fair"

If Ucd had any bit of deceny they'd put the game back two days anyway and it wouldn't be an issue

Well, unless John Healys confirmed you'll probably be catering for a whole bike-load

Seem to recall us not being able to do that earlier in the season because the FAI wouldn't let us. We had a game clashing with a WC semi-final.
