Scarily very true, but this is always the case for clubs that are seen as 'bigger' when playing 'minnows'. Obviously in our case there are a lot of knobs and knockers out there!

We're both right. The league was expanded, but Aberdeen were to be in a play-off with Falkirk, which was not held as their ground wasn't up to scratch.

Aberdeen lost 4-0 to Rangers alright. Jim Leighton's last game, I think? (Broke his jaw after about ten minutes). They lost 2-0 to Celtic in the League Cup Final.

Hmmm... where were you when your team were struggling against the likes of Stocksbridge Park Steels, Bamber Bridge and Witton Albion in Unibond Division 1? Eighteenth in your final Unibond season, wasn't it? But then you wouldn't know because you weren't one of the eighty-average crowd your lot "enjoyed" in that final, forgettable, English league season.

Face it, without Brooks Mileson and his millions you would still be a pub team yourselves. That said, I've followed your team's rise with fascination and look forward to seeing you (getting gubbed) at Celtic Park before too long.

That just lets them get an even bigger theory that they'll stuff Derry. Hopefully after 10 mins they'll realise that Derry are a lot better than any of the crap they'll play in their league

Two big things to take out of that game for me.

Firstly, a 6:0 win in their first game in the Scottish First Division will helpfully even further inflate the egos/expectations of everyone involved with what is essentially a pub/village team (though without even a village to belong to). Though it does also underline the fact that Gretna will be no pushover by any means.

Secondly : despite being the highest level of game Gretna have played to-date - within 5 days of their first ever Euro appearance - the crowd at that game was only 1,600. Not bad for a townland with a population of only 2,500, but it shows the utter finnacial folly of what Mileson is doing. With crowds like that the club will be in freefall when he inevitably pulls the plug at some point.

Also - City expect to bring as many away fans to the UEFA game in Glasgow as the total attendance at Gretna's first ever Scottish First Division home game. Who's the pub team now, eh....?

If the EL Premier isn't better than the Scottish First, we might as well all give up! I will be very disappointed if Derry do not beat Gretna, given that they have already beaten better teams than Gretna this season in Europe.

Gretna are only a Scottish Division 1 side in name, they beat Hamilton 6-0 in their first league game at the weekend. Realistically they would be as good as Kilmarnock/Aberdeen/Motherwell. Derry are a similar standard.

I'd recommend you to back Derry to win the 1st leg at 9/2 with William Hill though - the price must have been set by a Gretna fan!

We have already sold more tickets for the away leg then there were at the game yesterday.

We have no divine right to be arbitrarily better than any league or division. We'll be as good or as bad as the results show over the next two weeks. I don't know why people assume or believe Gretna will be beaten. They're a progressive club in the ascendancy. The very fact they're in European competition is testament to this. The fact they obliterated all opposition last year means you can't possibly judge their weakness. They may turn out to be not as good as they sound right now, but I don't know how anyone could know that for sure unless they've watched them play a fair few times over the last year.

McMenamin signs for Gretna
Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

Former Newcastle United and Livingston forward Colin McMenamin signed for Gretna today from Shrewsbury Town on a free transfer.

McMenamin began his career at neighbours Annan Athletic alongside midfielder Ryan McGuffie before they both joined the Magpies. McMenamin also had a spell on loan at Falkirk in 2003.

He made 44 appearances for The Shrews last season, scoring 11 times.

McMenamin joins former Blackburn Rovers defender Craig Barr as manager Rowan Alexander’s fourth signing of the close season.
