This is the same Martinez who has left him out of all of his squads so far this season as he thinks he needs more time to get back to first team football. There might have been no talk of a setback, but clearly they are choosing their moment to bring him back so that there is the smallest possibility of a relapse. I wouldn't usually be so trusting of club managers, but in this case I'd say his caution should be heeded.
Having said that, 45 minutes against Oman might be a nice way to ease him into first team football after having made the bench for Everton today. You never know, Martinez might have rang O'Neill himself and said it was a good idea.

What sort of accent does Gibson have? Danny?
It seems part Derry, part Scouse and part something different altogether.

Ha, it's funny you noticed that. It's not a pure Derry accent, even though he's from the Hazelbank area of the city. I remember being a bit puzzled by it too the first time I'd ever heard him in a public interview, as in, "Eh, where the hell did that come out of?!"
I'm pretty sure he didn't have what is a hybrid accent of sorts when he was at St. Columb's. I encountered him once or twice out and about in Derry shortly after he'd gotten the move to United and we exchanged a few brief words - congratulating him, wishing him the best and the like - but I hadn't recalled ever thinking there was anything unusual about his accent at the time. I know a few lads who were in his year at St. Columb's as well and they too found the affected accent development amusing. He would have spent a lot of time with John O'Shea after he moved to United - the two are pretty close - so my suspicion is that O'Shea's Waterford accent influenced it a bit, as there definitely are similarities in certain words. I'd imagine United do a fair bit of media training with their players as well so that might have impacted. He does tend to unusually stress or elongate certain pronunciations that might have been less clear to a global listener in a typical Derry city accent.
The Derry accent is a hard one to get rid of, as Nadine Coyle will attest to.
I was just listening to an interview with Wayne Rooney on the news there; his accent sounds a bit affected too. It's not a pure Scouse accent, is it?
Gibson came on and did what Gibson does which is what Whelan does - mostly short passes and nothing much too incisive, although I do remember one good through ball . I really don't think there is much of a difference between them. At least now though there is some cover in midfield.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.
Jeez, I hope Paul Green stays fit. Maybe Roy can make a comeback!

For those who were taken in by the alarmists in the Irish press jumping the gun and who missed the clarification earlier by Martinez. This misunderstanding is almost some kind of reversal of the Coleman/McCarthy saga.

not in the squad at all today, McCarthy, McGeady and Coleman all start for Everton: http://irish-abroad.appspot.com/Live#417753
Martinez's shallow lies shown up for what they are again. Does he ever tell the truth? Great to see McGeady start, though Martinez surely only offered it to him with a view to convincing him to declare for Scotland.
Come off it. Other people have been banned for making accusations of this sort. Gibson is far from guaranteed from making the squad and after taking a knock in training on the Wednesday, it's hardly surprising for him to miss out.
As far as we know he trained on the Thursday. It was just a knock from the ball hitting him so no reason to doubt Martinez at the moment. No need to jump the gun and pre-emptively accuse people like that.
Sarcasm, Irwin3, sarcasm.
Thankfully Martinez was to be trusted on this one. Big game for Everton against Lille at home. Win their two home games and they would be through. Hopefully Gibson will see some action over the next couple of games but with him currently looking as 4th choice, who knows?. He's only had one minute since the last international break.

"Darron is fully fit now," said Martinez. "The weekend was more of a precaution to allow him to get over that knock in training, but he's trained really well in the last three days so he'll be in contention [for Lille].
Gibson Fitness Pleases Martinez
Roberto Martinez is glad that Darron Gibson is close to regaining his full match fitness, amid injury concerns to holding midfield duo Gareth Barry and James McCarthy.
Gibson played 75 minutes against Sunderland on Sunday after coming off the bench to replace Barry, who left the field on a stretcher after damaging his ankle in a challenge with Jordi Gomez.
McCarthy soldiered through the full match, despite complaining of a hamstring problem in the closing stages when Everton had made all three substitutions.
Martinez is now awaiting the results of assessments on the pair to ascertain the full extent of their injuries.
Should either or both of the duo face a spell on the sidelines, Gibson could play a more important role having been largely limited to substitute appearances so far this season.
The only games the former Manchester United man, who was sidelined for virtually all of the 2013/14 season with a ruptured cruciate ligament, has started this term were at Swansea City in the League Cup and FK Krasnodar in the Europa League.
Martinez said: “Darron is still working towards getting to his best level of match fitness because he was out for nearly a year with the injury he picked up when he was with the Republic of Ireland national team.
“But we have seen today [Sunday] that he is a phenomenal passer of the ball. He has got incredible technical ability and it’s great to have him in the team.
“That’s why you need a large squad full of quality and, with Mo Besic too, there is good competition for places.”
