Was he on that Long?
Was he on that Long?
Whatever happened to Dr Ogba, who started this thread? I fear the worst.
No Somos muchos pero estamos locos.
Tets, you've fallen for a Tricky trap.
Am I right in saying that as Long was on the pitch we never conceded a goal?
We conceded 5 times in that 180 minutes so a goal every 36 minutes.
Or slightly another way we conceded 5 goals in 180-40 = 120 minute or one every 24 minutes.
Perhaps I don't remember him being on was because all I can remember was the opposition hitting the back of the net.
Mind you we did score our only goal when he was not on the pitch.
Actually I don't think he was.
64 mins Duff almost picks out Ward, but Italy scramble clear. Just before the corner, by the way, McGeady was replaced by Long.
75 min: Balotelli replaces Di Natale, Long is hooked in favour of Walters.
87 mins GOAL! Italy 2-0 Republic of Ireland (Balotelli 90) A wonderful, wonderful goal from the Manchester City striker. A corner swung in and an acrobatic volley crisper and sweeter than a Granny Smith apple.
Very unusual for a sub to be subbed. [edit - and indeed it was Doyle who came off]
Which changes it somewhat as he only had 11 minutes v Italy so that is a total of 26 minutes
Actually he had 5 mins of extra time making 31 mins

According to the BBC, Walters came on for Doyle.

Correction!!!
It was Kevin Doyle who came off not Long, I kind of realise that when re-watching it.
Yes that is right, I got my info from the Guardian site, who are renown for bad spelling and other slip-shod journalism it seems.

So much of what I wrote was a load of rubbish, but then nothing new there

Would add we were down to ten men when Baleoteli scored.
Overall the play was good when Long was on he made a contribution and I think I read he made
7 out of his 8 passes.

Actually I would kind of disagree, Long had a decent spell I think, which formed some of our best play in the games.
I just checked he made 14 of his 16 passes = 87% (Robbie 82%, Walters 61% Doyle 66% Cox 68%)
He made a pass every 2.5 mins----------------------(R 7.5 W 3.1 D 3.9 C 3.6 )
Grated the Spain game may skew things a bit, he didn't do much wrong and didn't give the ball away and was good value for money.
Also nobody scored when he was on and we had 10 men.
He should have had more time on the pitch IMO.
Also when you say he didn't do anything of note you could say the same of the rest of the bunch!!!
Gibson seems to be forgetting that he has got opportunities for Ireland and hasn't taken them. Where do these guys get off thinking they deserve assurances, etc. I feel a bit for Shane Long, who has been a consistent player for both Ireland and his clubs over a substantial period of time, but Gibson and a few more have a long way to go before they earn the right to go shooting their mouths off.

But I thought Gibson did really well against Bosnia, just before the Euros. Also, I think Gibson could do very well in a 3 man midfield - this has never been tried. Gibson has also stepped up his club career since he last played for us - regular football at a decent team is better than sporadic football at a good team. And he's better than Paul Green!
Where has Gibson shot off his mouth? I missed that.
Gibson missed a good few squads in this campaign due to injury, had played himself back into contention with performances for Everton, returned to the Ireland squad and performed on the pitch.
He is perfectly entitled should he so choose, to have a chat to the manager to find out where he stands. The manager is perfectly entitled to say 'you're not good enough to play ahead of (draftee) Paul Green'.
I'm not really saying that he shouldn't have been played or that Paul Green is better, I'm just saying that he hasn't done anything of note to justify assurances of any sort. He contributed little or nothing to the qualification campaign either, even less than Paul Green! There's a lot to be said for being professional, let your football do the talking and most of all be patient. Some of these prima donna's think they deserve to be played because they turned up in time. Same goes for the likes of McClean, fair enough I would have liked to have seen more of him too, but he's been playing at a decent level for a relatively short period of time, way too early to be getting ideas above his station.

I don't really think he is entitled to be honest. Maybe another year down the road if he is playing consistently well he might have earned the right some bit. He's been playing regular football for half a season and thinks he deserves answers, and might even be considering his international future if reports are correct!!
