Death of Dublin City

Had a look at the other sub forums on this topic. No one so far seems to have mentioned St. James's Gate, St. Francis, Newcastlewest, Thurles Town. I've probably forgotten a few.

But we would be fools to think GUFC might not join this unhappy group in the not too distant...

There have been many occassions in recent years when the two Louth clubs, Harps, Cobh, Kilkenny have gone so close to oblivion. I'm sure some of you will remember when Cork tried to survive with two clubs for a while, before bowing to the inevitable.

Coming back to the local scene, Joe Hanley, Gerry Gray and a few significant background people kept League of Ireland soccer in Galway when few others gave a toss.

The merger with the FAI will not be our saving grace. We need a core support of 1,500 - 2k, not 150 - 200.

Regionally an population wise we know we should be surviving well. Maybe we haven't courted the support of the non-national community enough?

In any event, Home Farm was a very proud club, with a very proud tradition, handing the franchise to Dublin City was plainly a bad move.

The demise of this club shows us again just how football mirrors life. There's no room for sentiment - it's results, results, results - or failure - and ultimate extinction.

everyone here knows about GUFC - but so many people dont even consider attending a game - because it doesnt even enter their heads!

the few you do manage to bring along - usually experience a boring 0-0 and theyve been exposed to too much premiership la liga etc.

its entertainment their after not - support

if the standard of soccer isint there then its atmophere - again hard to do - with low supporters turning out - even worse again - when the away fans comprimise 10!!

all that can be done is for the people to go to keep promoting it - we all know 7000 will pack into terryland for an FAI cup semi - so people will go - but it has to be generated as a season long thing - and GUFC is your club etc. - get a sense of ownership

personally dont think summer soccer is helping - the competition from GAA is way to strong - and people are out and about doint other stuff on long evenings - not watching GUFC

without question there should be 1500 at everyhome match at least regardless - GUFC has one of the nicest small grounds (and new stand on way) in the league

for the city and county population its a disgrace

but thats irish soccer for you - have to keep trying - and hopefully get the FAI to smarten up along the way

I grew up in County Galway. I played Junior soccer in the GDL for years. I support an English premiership team. I have never set foot in Terryland for a GUFC game - though I played there in plenty GDL cup finals. The eL holds no interest for me. There is no emotional attachment to GUFC. You need to somehow get the kids in and maybe then build a support base.
People vote with their feet and the counter attractions are cinema/pub/GAA etc - the other factor is success. Get into the Premier and have a run at the title and you'll have 2000 per game. Who's gonna go watch Monaghan (all respect to that club) - the Galway people would come out to see Shels, Cork, Drogheda.

Unfortunately nothing suceeds like success and you need some to attract back the crowds!

If United were flying high in the premier COOEE would you then visit terryland yourself? If not, why?

I spend most of my time in the Junior football forum. I drop into the GUFC forum because it is my local team - so probably due to long term GAA interests I would "support" Galway teams.
Would I go to Terryland to see Cork, Drogs, Shels - there's a good chance.

And even more so if they were on telly from time to time and I kinda got to know the players. The recent TV coverage and live games on telly has raised my awareness and appreciation of eL football. The runs in Europe of Cork/Shels certainly show me the the standard is decent - but that's in the Prem - Div 1 is a stepping stone.

Also you are correct - local coverage is not that great! I guess you guys can live in hope.

well youve proven in your response that it does hold some interest and you have some emotional attachment - your local team

lets hope your not waiting too long to get down to terryland - it goes hand in hand though the more likely people are to go see them now the more likely they will be playing drogs and cork - vicious circle

think the telly thing is a bit of a mixed blessing - its lashing rain and its on the box - are you going walking down the dyke road then...

the club are certainly trying to attract more people to terryland with free admission for kids and very reasonable prices for adults. EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO SUPPORT ANY TEAM THEY WANT TO BUT I AM A GREAT BELIEVER IN SUPPORTING YOUR LOCAL CLUB. GETTING UP TO TERRYLAND ONCE OR TWICE A SEASON ISNT TOO MUCH TOO ASK. CORK CITY WERE HER LAST YEAR IN THE CUP AND WERE LUCKY TO GET A REPLAY AND SHAMROCK ROVERS WERE BEATEN HERE THIS YEAR SO THERE IS ABILITY HERE IN GALWAY AND SO CALLED BIG TEAMS PLAYING HERE.
summer football has a lot of plus points although it was difficult this year with the world cup being on. I know there was a short break but the eejits at fai started up the league on the same night as a world cup quarter final.
a new stand and a decent team are all under way at gufc so now is the time to support the team. try getting away from watching a match on telly
