Right, so to sum up...by 2011, we should be challenging for the Champions League trophy.

Not to mention they're a good way of seeing just how much Irish teams have improved. Anyone have the co-effs of the league for the last 10/15 years?

EDIT: Actually, they're already on that site.

Not really comparing like with like. Europe has exploded countrywise & none of your pre-qualifying rounds or the like then.

For instance in 1989, Derry drew a Benfica side of internationals managed by Sven in the 1st round of the European Cup. They went on to the final as far as I remember.

The League of Wales was only set up in 1992, so before that it would have been teams such as Swansea and Cardiff City winning the Co-efficient points - getting into Europe by winning the Welsh Cup. The Welsh teams playing in the English leagues are now banned from the Welsh Cup.

Ye you have to judge from around 2000 on when multiple teams from each big country were in the competition. Also, before 1999 qualifying points were worth the same as points in the group stage and beyond.

This is the same Derry City side that lost 0-4 to Cardiff City in 1988

"Drew" as it came out of a draw paired with.....

It he was referring to the result he would have said "drew with"
Tifo poles, sausage rolls and a few goals.

So we close the gap on team above and Cork beat a Cyprus Team and they ranked at 28 while Ireland are at 38.

Well done to Cork last night although they will have it very tough to get anything out of the Red Star Belgrade match, they have 6 players that was at the world cup finals in germany

Given how relatively difficult the draws have been this season it would show huge progress for 3 el sides to make it to the 2nd qualifying rounds knocking out teams from countries ranked 26th, 28th, 32nd.

Remember also this season is no fluke as just building on recent successes as eL sides have consistently beaten teams from countries ranked above us. Croatia (25th), Sweden (26th), Lithuania (33rd) etc... Also the points from 02/03 and 03/04 were minimal so can only improve on those.

We were well beaten by Slavia Prague (14th ranked country) last year although with some luck could have made a lot closer. We are as good this year but Serbs "only" ranked 20th.

Getting Drogs & Derry into the 2nd round should the first goal ahead of any ranking points (teams unlikely to get much more difficult for them in 2nd round).

Yes agreed would hope for a win from Derry or Drogheda next week and both teams to get through, that would be great for Ireland

I think it would be a first too - We've never got all 3 teams through their 1st rounds before!

Wales's representatives back then were almost always Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham etc. And they were stronger teams than they are now (with possible exception of Cardiff).

Turkish club football was pure muck back in those days. It's only in the last decade or so that they've come-on a lot.

No idea re Denmark or Poland - but the Welsh reps were effectively English clubs, so if you look at it that way it's no huge surprise.

For the record - the Welsh clubs playing in the English pyramid system are not banned from playing the Welsh Cup. It's just deliberately made nigh-on impossible for them to do so by synching the Welsh rounds with the English FA Cup games and then demanding the best possibne team turns out for any Welsh Cup games.

I can assure you Viking that that is not the case. This came direct from the horses mouth (Alun Evans, Chairman of the League of Wales).

They are not allowed to prevent a Welsh club from entering the Welsh Cup. To get round this, they make sure they schedule Welsh Cup ties on the same day as FA Cup ties, and then insist on all teams fielding their strongest squads. As the exiles will always prefer the FA Cup to the Welsh version, they would fall foul of this and therefore don't enter at all.

Like I said, straight from the horse's mouth....

Didn't Newport County get to the Q/F of the Cup Winners' Cup in 82 or so? Ended up being knocked out by Atalanta, I think, but only by a goal.

In 1981 Newport got to the qf of the ECWC losing out to eventual beaten finalists Carl Zeiss Jena. Newport drew 2-2 in Jena but then lost 1-0 at home.

Glentoran have also played in the qf of the ECWC (1974) and Linfield reached the qf of the European Cup in 1967.
