    Fourth Officials?

Last night Stephen O Flynn was correctly sent off for Derry. However, none of the 3 regular officials saw the incident. The 4th official called the referee over and pointed out the incident. Which leads to my question, is this within the 4th officials remit? Just curious as I have never seen a player sent off by a 4th official before.

I have never seen it happen in the LOI before as they dont give a **** about the game but they can inform the referee just like the linesmen do.

In accordance with 'The Laws of the game' any incident of Violent Conduct not seen by the 3 officials (Referee and Assistants) can be acted upon by the 4th official.

    • He must indicate to the referee when the wrong player is cautioned
because of mistaken identity or when a player is not sent
off having been seen to be given a second caution or when violent
conduct occurs out of the view of the referee and assistant referees.
The referee, however, retains the authority to decide on all
    points connected with play

    • After the match, the fourth offi cial must submit a report to the
appropriate authorities on any misconduct or other incident that
has occurred out of the view of the referee and the assistant referees.
The fourth offi cial must advise the referee and his assistants
    of any report being made

    • He has the authority to inform the referee of irresponsible behaviour
by any occupant of the technical area

It was actually due to a UEFA Directive stating that all Senior Leagues in each Association had to have Fourth Officials appointed to games.

Alan Murphy received a yellow card in the same incident with O'Flynn on the advice of the 4th official. This card will have to be rescinded as the 4th official can only notify the referee of red card offences that are missed by the other officials and not yellow card offences.
