Why is it that that the English, Scots and Irish always appear to bring the most support to away matches? I guess that if we were in Gemany this time around we would take more bodies over to Gemany than any other nation.I am saying this as there appeared to be a lot of empty spaces at the final last night.
Becuase they love a big pis* up and will travel far and wide for one.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

Not much of a bandwagon supporting Ireland for the last 4 years. By your name you obviously follow a league of ireland team, fair play but its not a necessary qualification.
England have the largest following of all at this time. Interest to note during Euro 88 only the USSR had fewer supporters. But its all about how you measure these things. If you were to do it to population ratio then certainly we would be near the top.
A good bit of the Tartan Army are country first and club second and the same with the Dutch fans also. What is wrong with supporting your country first. Its good if somebody has a club team but it should not be necessray. Not everybody is form a town or city where there is an EL club.

Thats it exactly. English thing is a fairly recent phenomenon and most of their fans support lower league clubs. Same in Scotland, very very few Celtic/Rangers fans would travel abroad with Scotland.
And anybody who doesn't support a club cannot be classed as a supporter.

What a rubbish stament there Dodge and you should moderate yourself from such **** stirring comments. You support St Pats, fair enough why is that not good enough for you , no you then have to take on a superiority complex and call other people who support their country, not supporters. There are people who come from towns or counties were there are no EL clubs.

What a load of sh*t. Typical eircom league attitude. I neither support an eircom league club or any club outside this country. What about players/ club members at junior level?? The put in more football hours than the average el supporter
So if you dont support an EL club you cant support Ireland, are you serious Dodge? I am sure this is a wind up so I will ignore
no need to say typical Eircom League attitude, I know lots and lots of EL fans and they are decent open minded guys who are willing to realise that not everybody is lucky enough to grow up in the vicinity or have the passion for an EL club. What they dont have is the snobbery and ignorant views that Dodge just posted. If its a wind up its sad and if its not it is equally sad in my view. Lets not tar all the Ireland fans or all the EL fans with the same brush. Generlisations dont work in this area in my view.

Where did I say that? I said you can't be called a supporter. Surely everybody Irish person who likes football wants the Irish national team to do well? How can anybody define support there? Are the millions that lined the streets of Rome/Milan/Naples/Turin last nigt not Italy supporters (in your terms)
I'll say it again, the ONLY people in Ireland who can legitimately call themselves supporters are those who support their local sides. I'm not commenting on people's rights to watch international football.

What about somebody who goes to every Irish internation home and away and grew up in Kerry where there is no El side or in Clare or in wexford etc.

Fair enough
They are supporters as well Dodge, just cause they dont support EL fans, they are Ireland supporters as opposed to people who cheer on their country during a world cup. Nothing wrong with taht either.

You're missing my point entirely. Its a given that you want the national team to do well. If you go to the games, fine (and if you're involved with junior football, you're more entitled to tickets thatn most) and I hope you enjoy the games.
However, only people who support clubs can be called supporters. "Folllowing" the national team is totally different

ok, this argument is really about nothing at this stage anyway. to be honest it doesn't matter to me. National team ' follower' v national team supporter, no difference.
