Are you thinking of Ailton - the barrel-chested striker that was one of the top scorers in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen a few years ago...possibly moved to Turkey (?).

I don't remember any player lambasting Kerr. There might have been some reading between the lines. I thought the players spoke well of Kerr and were carefull enough to blame themselves.

Maybe while he was manager, after all no player is going to p!ss off a manager with places at stake. But I seem to remember Richard Dunne having a few comments after Kerr left the job.

Not Alan Kirby. Paul Whelan - the sub keeper - joined us during 2004. Never actually played though. Dessie Baker played once for us.

Five of that French squad (1997) are playing tonight - Sagnol, Henry, Trezequet, Sylvestre, Gallas. There is also FIVE Argentinians as someone has already pointed out - Riquelme, Aimar, Cambiasso etc. I thought Saviola and Sorin also but that must have been the class of 1999 who also won it I believe.

My point is that if we were there we would only have Duffer in the squad. Also England only have Owen and Carragher. Can we read into this the state of football on these Islands.

Glen Crowe scored in the 3/4 place play off against Ghana.
I dont think Aidan Lynch featured much at all as he was on crutches.
Looking at the teams in the World Cup Ireland just didnt have the players good enough to qualify no matter who was the manager.

Wrong on both counts (you really should learn to trust me here!!

Can't find a link anywhere on the aul internet, but have the game on video at home and can assure you that Duff and Dessie Baker scored, with Aidan Lynch ending the match on crutches. He was the only player not to have played a game up to that stage.

Was thinking the same myself. In their friendly defeat to England Pekerman took off Crespo & Riquelme & lost from a winning position. Same thing again in Berlin. Unbelievable.

Inexcusable mistake. How could he think that they could protect a one nil lead against the Germans in their own backyard.Its an absolute disaster that a team full of so much talent and entertainment go out of the world cup prematurly.He had to go, I don�t think even Kerr could have made such a Fcuk up.

You are spot on with your first point. But it's going to take 50 years to fix that. We follow slavishly the English way of doing things. All their training for decades has been based primarily on physical fitness, with technical ability an afterthought. Even the GAA have caught this particular disease with almost nobody in the game of Gaelic football being able to kick a ball accurately! Anglo-centric football produces players who have great engines but cannot pass to a team-mate. This inability to retain possession is the root of all that is wrong with football in these parts and it is no surprise that the most recent European Champions League winning side from England was coached by a Spaniard.

As regards when we are going to qualify again I would like to remind you all of what happened to our neighbours North of the border. Quarter-finalists in 1958 they didn't qualify again until 1982. Did well there made 1986 and haven't made it since.

We made it in 1990 and 1994 missed out on 1998 and got there again in 2002. On this occasion it could take longer to get back given we are currently 4th seeds. We could be looking at least at a 16 year interval between World Cups down here this time around.

Lippi got what he deserved last night in the same way that Erikson and Pekerman and I hate to say it Kerr got too.

I am a firm believer in that fortune favours the brave and fair play to Lippi last night.
