    Finn Harps….3
    Limerick……0

    By Chris Mc Nulty

Sean ‘Wizard' Mc Gowan's young Finn Harps second-string defeated Limerick FC 3-0 at The Curragh Athletic Grounds in Killygordan on Sunday last to progress to the final of the pre-season tournament. With the first-team having a break at the weekend, Harps manager, Mc Gowan had such players as Chris Breen, Shaun Mc Gowan, Barry Curran and Chris Malseed available for selection and all three started.

Harps had qualified for this semi-final having topped Group 2 ahead of Dublin City while Limerick came through Group 1 to take up their place in Sunday's semi-final. The Shannon-siders arrived at Finn Park, where they remained until informed of the change in venue. Certainly, they must now be wishing that they had stayed put on Navenny Street.

Attired in the yellow, Brazil-like jerseys Harps enjoyed a brilliant first period and against a Limerick side which mirrored their first team – strong and physical - they led two-nil at the break thanks to strikes from the two Barrys – Curran and Mulligan. Curran, who will miss the first team's game against Galway this coming Saturday, fired home the first before Mulligan spun off his man to head home number two and give his side a two-goal advantage at the break.

Two became three when Darren Meenan nipped in to score after Chris Breen broke free only to see his shot saved by John Healy in the Limerick goal. This was a good win for Sean Mc Gowan's young charges and they now look forward to a final meeting with Cork City at a venue yet to be decided. Cork defeated Dublin City in the second semi-final at the weekend. With a certain degree of disappointment among supporters of the Ballybofey club after disappointing results for the first team, this will give them a timely boost.

In recent years, the Harps Under 21s have enjoyed successful campaigns and at this stage it looks as if 2006 will see that trend continue. The young Harps kick off their Dr Tony O Neill League campaign this weekend with an away fixture against Sligo Rovers.

Finn Harps: Gavin Cullen, Brian Lafferty, Matthew Crossan, Shaun McGowan, Barry Mulligan, Shane O Connor, Barry Curran, Chris Malseed, Chris Breen, Darren Meenan, Ryan Mc Gavigan. Subs: Johnny Gallagher (for Curran), Scott Devenney (for O Connor).

Limerick FC: John Healy, Gary Prout, Paul Fitzgerald, Paul Donaghey, Ken Kiely, Gerard Burke, Paul Moravey, John Lester, Derek Mc Carthy, Liam Costello, David Ryan. Subs: Peter White (for Moravey), Edward Brazier (for Costello), Ronan Collins (for Prout).
