Pele was before my time so has to be Maradona who carried average teams to World Cup win and finals.

how the hell is Best or De Stefano not on the list!!! ....or dare I say it Zidane now that hes finished? Had to vote for Maradonna in that case. Garrincha was genius but the least professional footballer ever. In one match he got put off for dribbling past a defender too much and embarassing him while in another game he was dribbling so much that the game spilled over to the surrounding running track and was allowed to continue because the crowd loved it so much!

Cause George Best never played at a World Cup for one! And neither for the record did Alfredo Di Stefano ...Originally Posted by Flea
oh yeah forgot it was in the world cup forum and not world football, that still doesnt excuse leaving out Stuart Pearse.Originally Posted by CollegeTillIDie
reckon it has to be by an armslenght (excuse the pun) Maradonna. And what i love about him still is his love for Argentina and turning up for the matches in his colours, not only a great player but also a great fan.
If there was a poll for the best player never to grace the finals there could only be one Georgie Best
Hard to take that poll seriously if Zidane is not on the list.
I have not see a great deal of many players on the list playing
apart from the odd highlight (never hear of some of them )
Anyway Zidane is the worlds most expensive footballer if you are
willing to put your money where your mouth is, and that was a 2001
value, before the likes of Abramavich(spelling?).
Whenever I have watched him play well, he seems to stand out
from the players around him, which makes the opposition, many of them
'world class' players, look like donkeys.
As far as 'character' is concerned, the poll leader Maradona, is a blatent
cheat (hand of god goal), and I doubt he would ever legally disposess
Zidane in a one on one situation.
I doubt Zidane would cleanly disposess Maradona to often either. I don't see what bearing that has on anything.Originally Posted by tricky_colour

Maybe not but overall I would give Zidane my vote, he just makes thingsOriginally Posted by John83
look so easy, mentally he appears to be on a different level, he seems
to able to 'bamboozle' the opposition, something Duff used to do,
albeit in a different fashion, sort of effortlessly?
Anyway, my main memory of Maradona is as a cheat, and I don't vote for them!!
Depends which Zidane you are talking about-the extremely gifted midfielder who can dance past players with ease or the brainless, lazy, arrogant **** that stands in the centre circle for 90mins!Two very different players!Originally Posted by tricky_colour
No Comment.
Diego for me , pele over-rated imo but still good enough to come in second best in world cup terms , Zidane performed hugely for Real as well and i would put him in second after diego on my all time list with pele third.
I think Diego is by far the best player ever though, a world cup and another final , went to napoli who had never won eff all and then won them a couple of leagues and a uefa cup , they never won eff all after he left either. can't be a coincidence that argentina lost the game that he left early against germany this year either!!
Was he crazy!! Yeah , in a very special way , an Irishman.
I slept, and dreamed that life was Beauty;
I woke, and found that life was Duty.
Gerd Muller, Pele, Ronaldo, Gary Breen
Maradona is the greatest player of all time (just ahead of Puskas), but arguably Pele had a greater influence in the World Cup.
diStefano, VanBasten did little or nothing in the World Cup. Puskas, Kocsis, Fontaine only starred in one World Cup.
If people could think beyond the British Isles there are a few other half decent players to challenge Best for best player never to play in World Cup...
George Weah springs to mind

Maradona!!!
It has to be bacause of the famous "Hand of God" everyone know what goal i am talking about because there isn't a more memorable goal!
