    Your own greatest sporting moments

So what personal sporting achievements or highlights stand out in your memory.

Mine would be (a) taking a diving catch in a cricket match against Aer Lingus which meant us winning the game and achieving promotion, (b) playing in my school's table tennis final with the whole school looking on (even though I lost), (c) scoring my first try in school's rugby when I was about 14 against Wesley College and (d) scoring a rare goal in the Amateur League by lobbing the keeper from about 30 yards (probably nearer 20). We lost the game 5-1 but I still remember it
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

I've a few medals from schoolboy football and hurling for my school. My proudest achievment is getting the "Most Improved Player" award one year (the same year I was top scorer) for my schoolboy team.

Took a wicket playing for ma priamry school B team against the local Catholic school in cricket

Best one though would be winning the Surrey St. John Ambulance 5-a-side tournament I pulled off some great saves which I thought I could never do in the final! In the match before the final we were trouncing this team about 4-0 so I swapped with one of the defenders went up and scored-I knew it would be my only goal of the tournament so we went crazy with shirt off skidding down the pitch an all even though that put us on about 6-0

    chess is a sport?

i won the draughts one a once and got a bronze twice, but i wouldnt count it as a sport, but an achievement, yes, its great to be an all-ireland champ!...

My greatest sporting achievement would be scoring a 30 yard free to equalise in a final i played recently...and we went on to win!

Great idea for a thread! particularly for the sportingly useless types like me.

Started up a football team when I was atttending (a quite tiny) art college -Crawford CAD down in Cork.

I scored our opening goal in a challenge match 3-2 win over UCC.

I'd talk ye through the goal but I'd be afraid the tale of how I was bewilderingly left completely unmarked (must have been on the basis of my performance up to that point ) on the edge of their area when a corner kick was drilled low into my path and met with a volley of such class I've never since been able to replicate it might just seem a bit too proud.

    Mine:

Footy - playing in the Villa FC 5-a-side 1992 final. Lost 0-3. Played on goal for the final. Still have the R/U plaque. Incidentally enough is the only thing I have to show for.

Rugger - Lost 2 finals I ever played in all in the same year (2000). The first, lost the Casey Cup Final to Clonmel. (First final appearance in 20 years) Got royally tanked 45-20. Scored a try. Lost the Evans Cup Final to Cashel to a last minute try. Big crowd at both games.

Hurling - Scoring 5 goals against Kilmacthomas in the East Waterford U-14 B Semi-final. MOTM. played an absolute stinker in the final and got taken off. We lost. Also had the honour of representing my school DLS Waterford in the Munster Senior Colleges Hurling Championship. Beat Lismore & St Augustines College Dungarvan before getting annihilated by Midelton in Quarter Final.

Cricket - Took a great wicket in a tournament game circa 1995 against Waterford IT and beat them to boot. Got run out for 4 in the next game.

Mine probably would be winning the FAI Youth Cup with Tralee Dynamos in 1998 infront of 3000 people in Tralee against Stella Maris who had Richie Baker in their team

We won 2-1, they scored in the last minute after we were 2-0 ahead.

On the way we beat, Limerick FC, Sligo Rovers and Drogheda Utd (Oh the irony ) on penalties in Utd Park.

We were 3-1 down on penos and came back to win in sudden death. We were like celebraties after that around the town.

Notable players that have moved on now would be Derek O'Brien who plays with Galway now after being with Sligo and Galway again before that. And Niall Hobbart who was underage international for a while and had stints at Bray and Kilkenny as far as I know.

Me on the other hand went to college and got drunk and fat What wasted talent.

My own was about 10 years ago playing rugby for White Plains RFC, playing on the wing took a pass from Gary Lambert who was about 40 then and I scored an easy try. Gary was a US International player(yes, they do have a team) who was selected to the best XV for the Rugger World Cup in 1987.
