Sad passing of Saints legend
St Patrick’s Athletic legend Shay Gibbons, one of the all-time top goalscorers in the League of Ireland, has passed away. Gibbons was the top scorer in the league on three separate occasions, in 1952, ’53 and ’56, and scored 120 league goals in total during his career.
His goals helps the Inchicore club to outright league glory on three occasions in the 1950s, including Saints’ first ever League of Ireland crown in 1951/52. That golden era of St Patrick’s Athletic players also included Ronnie Whelan Snr, Harry Boland, Ginger O’Rourke and Willie Peyton, while perhaps Gibbons’s finest hour at club level saw him score five goals against a Cork Athletic side managed by subsequent Leeds United boss Raich Carter.
