Worrying times for Utd fans.....
    Wrong.

An offical bid of £10 million was made for Carrick during the World Cup.

    nearly 19 million for Carrick.....

what would a prime Keane go for in todays market??!! I see they have also put in a bid for Senna (a much more reasonable £3million).

Very good player IMO but he's pushing 30 so won't be around for long.

8 million is OTT for Carrick. Why not break the bank for Gattuso? Proven at all levels not just against Bolton away.

Agree and I think they'd get Gattuso for the sort of money they are paying for Carrick. Different story whether he'd up sticks though.

Spurs are laughing on this one I think. Good player gone but 18 millions is great business in my view.

I tell you what fella's I wouldn't fork out 18.6m on football manager for him!!!! The football world has gone mad. I know they won't have to pay 18 million in one installment, they have plenty of clauses in place that might never be met....but even still.... 18 million?!! Gattuso must be worth 30 million, Pirlo the same. Spurs aren't just laughing, they must be rubbing their eyes out looking at that cheque from Manchester Utd USA Ltd! Spurs can go out and buy the rest of Ivory Coast's midfield now.

£18.6m is far too much for Carrick at the moment, but I think he will be worth that in his prime.

How is it, Already people are now comparing him to Keane etc. Ferguson even said that many players woudl not be willing to take the number as it is added pressure.

Anybody that compares him to Keane just because he wears the same number is an idiot. Tidy player that Carrick is, he's not a patch on what Keane was and I doubt he'll get close to that level either.

I agree he will never come to Keanes level but because he plays in the same position and is now going to wear his number in the same way that Keane was compared to Robson Carrick will be compared to Keane as he is his replacement. The difference is Keane ended up to be better than Robson and Carrick will not be better than Keane.

Ferguson is looking to sign another CM, probably Senna, as a replacement for Keane, so Carrick will be used in a different role. Ferguson is looking to turn him into an all-round midfielder and give him more freedom than what he had at Spurs.

If you let a squad number affect your performance on the pitch you can hardly be called a professional and would be bothered by a number of different stupid things. And when did Ferguson say it would be added pressure?

Nothing about playing him in a different role, plenty about his number though.

    Carrick seals United move

Michael Carrick has signed for Manchester United after passing a medical. The England midfielder finalised his deal on Monday evening, and will be unveiled as a United player to the media on Wednesday.

Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that Carrick, who should make his United debut against Porto or Ajax at this weekend's Amsterdam Tournament, will wear the number 16 shirt, famously vacant since the departure of Roy Keane in November 2005.

The 25-year-old England international says the move has been timed perfectly to take his career to the next level. "It's an offer that has come at the right time - professionally and personally," he said. "I felt I couldn't turn it down. This is a football decision, a decision not driven by money."

Carrick also thanked Spurs boss Martin Jol for the role played in his development as a player, adding: "I've had a great time at Spurs and the club has been brilliant for me. Martin is a great manager and has done an enormous amount for my career. Without any doubt he has helped develop me into a better player. He gave me a chance when I needed it, stood by me and I will always thank him for that."

Sir Alex said Carrick was encouraged to be given Roy Keane's old shirt number. "I said to him 'I'm giving you the number 16 jersey' so he was delighted at that," said the Reds boss. "I think that showed great courage because sometimes players are a bit superstitious about things like that but he was keen and said he would gladly take number 16."

Yes that is an option but it will only be a last resort. United have tried to sign Mascherano, Vieira and now Senna- all holding midfield players. Ferguson obviously wants to sign a holding midfield player similar to Keane.
