    Angry Tax Cheats

Bailey brothers pay up €22m in tax bill

THE Bailey brothers and an insurance company are among the biggest tax dodgers named in the Revenue Commissioner's record €55m clawback.

The quarterly list of tax defaulters features 12 settlements in excess of €1m each, but Mick and Tom Bailey contributed the largest single amount with the highest-ever published settlement of €22m.

Their construction company, Bovale Ltd, was investigated by the Flood Tribunal,, which found that Michael Bailey made corrupt payments to former Fianna Fail minister Ray Burke and former assistant Dublin city manager George Redmond.

The settlement is made up of €12.4m in unpaid income tax, corporation tax, VAT and PAYE/PRSI, and €9.6m in interest and payments. [/QUOTE]

Why are these people not in jail? Guilty of tax fraud & found out to be bribing politicians in the Tribunals (why ar the gardai not investigating this?)

Anyone who votes for FF on the back of that relevation has only themselves to blame. How much "donations" do these builders give FF every year?

In other countries they'd be sharing a jail cell with their bought politicians!

I think you'll find it wasn't just FF Politicians . You might also see that most big builders/business donate to a few parties. In Ben Dunne’s case Haughey(FF) & Lowery(FG). If the Monk can settle & not go to jail, obviously The Gardai are unable to prosecute, if the revenue agree a settlement.

I'm amazed they've gotten away without a jail sentence to be honest. It's something the Revenue are trying to push against the top defaulters and have already done on at least one occasion.

    • They remain FF members and canvass for the party (did at the last local elections)
    • They are large donors to FF
    • They have prime spots in the FF Tent at Galway Races evey year.

And Ringo, it was mainly FF politician's that were corrupt, but then look at the leader of the party at the time. Indeed look at the current leader who signed blank cheques for CJH. Lowry rolls of the tongue because he's the only name most can remember from any other party.

Its the people involved that are corrupt , not the party. In a lot of cases , money donated for the party was taken , by these people. The likes of Redmond was just a corrupt civil servant. According to Frank Dunlop, a Fine Gael councillor, Tom Hand, now deceased, demanded IR£250,000 for his support for Quarryvale. So outrageous was this demand, according to Dunlop, that he reported it to the then Fine Gael leader, John Bruton, in 1993 – John Bruton has no recollection of being told this. This is the sme John Bruton who considered Lowery his best friend. Where does Sinn Fein's money come from? Where Did The Workers Party/DL money come from?

It is interesting that a report about payments to fine Gael councillors states

"Both Frank Dunlop and Michael Bailey supported constituency fund-raising events such as the Swords lunch and a golf classic. Michael Bailey also made premises available to Fine Gael as its election H.Q. in 1992. These matters have already been disclosed by Fine Gael to the Flood Tribunal. "

2 names, and an accusation of Bruton turning a blind eye.

Off the top of my head, FF - Pee Flynn, Ray Burke, Liam Lawlor, CJH, GV Wright. All proved in Tribunals.

You can add in Beverly Cooper Flynn and Denis Foley for off shore accounts too.

If ignoring advice on corrupt politicians is an offence, where does that leave Bertie with regard to Ray Burke, who Albert Reynolds warned him about? Or Bertie being friends and so loyal to CJH.

Ignoring the political issues for a while - should large scale tax fraudsters see jail time?

IMO its not enough just to pay penalties on interest & use the State as a deferred payment loan.

The point i was making is that The Bailey Brothers have given to other political parties other than FF. The names mention in FF are high profile, but if you look at the link to The FG report, you'll see that a lot more people took money thn the high profile names. I'm not excusing the corrupt politicians. But its a bit foolish, to say FF are all Corrupt & all the other parties are saints.

No, FF are just more corrupt than other parties and it ran to the very top of the organisation, and the Bailey Brothers are members of FF, not of any of the other parties they donated to.

A lot of so called tax fraudstars did pay tax, just not the ridiculous amount Goverments of the eighties wanted.I have sympathy with hard working business people that did not want to hand over 70% of their earnings to incompetent corrupt Goverments.

Has to be wind up, but never mind.
    • One of the reasons the tax was so high was because so many were bloody evading it!
    • The current settlements don't necessarily relate to the 80's, and if they do why didn't they take advantage of the amensties?
    • PAYE workers had a higher tax burden in the 80's than the rich (some things never change), it wasn't close to 70% for non PAYE.

    Load of Boll*x.

The Bailey Brothers were not innocent ordinary people trying to scrape a living together. They stole a variety of taxes from the state that they deducted out of their own employees wages but never paid the state.

I am not suggesting these people be locked up into Mountjoy but they could at least 6 months in some work camp or something.

A lot of the tax fraudsters were people such as publicans, doctors, solicitors etc...

Some people had the choice of owning up in the various amnesties but still thought they could get away with.

I'Ve never seen a piece ,about them being members? Where?

As regards tax evasion, its totally wrong. I think the huge fines are the way to go, hurt them where it really matters.

No apparently they were all FF TD'S As for the weather, the rain is the goverments fault. What are they doing about it? If we change the goverment everything will be great again, The health service will be sorted, no traffic problems & you'll be able to kill a mugger in Kenya & get away with it.

The only people in this country who began the 1980's with nothing and ended the 1980's having made money without dodging tax were U2. And they availed of special tax breaks which are allowed.
