It doesn't answer your specific question SB67 but here's an interesting link to the British Council website that seeks to explain club names to, in this case, the Japanese. Sligo Rovers receives an honourable mention on page 2 (as do the Milltown Travellers... )

A lot of the seniors who support us say that when Sligo fc was founded we were the top side at the time so Sligo took 'Rovers' as a kind of respect. As I wasn't around at the time I can't say this was definate but a guy from Sligo I used to work with says that the story is definately true as his grandad had told him the same thing. I often wondered why Sligo Rovers wasn't just Sligo fc, why the founders felt it necessary to add the 2nd bit. Would it be possible that there was a Sligo gaa side at the time and they wanted to make sure both sides weren't mixed up?

Hoopy - your full of shiit. U've just mad evey word of that up.

Rovers was an amalgimation of two club - St. Marys and another club who were around before Shams were even founded so I dont believe anything you say.

As for all the bs about why we have a second name a not just Sligo FC - however many Irish teams are name just all the place they come from?

Sorry about dashing your ego trip lads !
Rogue you may be right, all I can do is tell you what I've heard from people, including a Sligo fan, about the name.

Rovers would have been a reasonably common football team name
as far back as the late 19th century - Blackburn Rovers were amongst the
founding members of the football league. GUFC were formed as Galway Rovers
    in 1937.

I dunno - I think it's perfectly possible the team was named in honour of Shams. They used to have a good team, you know.

Anyway, for god's sake, lads, did we not spend enough time talking about Division 1 teams last year? Can we get back to talking about the Premier now?
