Irish Players Released by British Clubs

Maybe all this should be kept to 'List of all Irish players in Britain' thread but would it make sense to have it made a sticky in its own right?

    Confirmed:
    Karl Bermingham - Man City
    Richie Partridge - Sheffield Wednesday
    Cathal Lordan - Ipswich
    Gerard Nash - Ipswich
    Graham Barrett - Coventry
    Brian O'Callaghan - Notts County
    Ritchie Ryan - S****horpe.
    Billy Dennehy - Sunderland.
    Gary Breen - Sunderland

    Maybe:
    Colin Healy - Livingston
    Kenny Cunningham - Birmingham

I never quite understand how players go from being developed by one of the really big clubs to not even being good enough for division 1. A club like Liverpool can't have got it that wrong.

In fairness, he was eight at the time, and they played him in goals.

Cathal Lordan and Gerard Nash were released by Ipswich a few weeks ago. I thought Lordan in particular might have done something. He looked decent after banging in their two goals in the Youth Cup Final last season.

I don't know if they get it so wrong as such. I think that they take an interest in players who show potential when young but very few are anywhere near the finished article. They rely on these players to develop and get better with age. Some do, some don't, some get far better while others only become slightly better.

Take Joey O'Brien for instance. Allardyce reckons he was planning to let him go only a couple of seasons ago as he never looked like a player but less than two years later he's playing in the first team week in week out.

Who knows. If Partridge wasn't injured for so much of his career he would probably have made the right wing position at Liverpool his own by now. Another manager would have been a help too. Gerrard is the only player that Houllier brought through the ranks in his 6 years at the club, ironically he spotted Gerrard while going to watch Partridge in a reserve game. They were both promoted to the first team at an early age.

There was a point last season when a load of Liverpool fans wanted Partridge to get a start as he was so impressive coming off the bench in the Carling cup and changing games. I think he can still have a decent career ahead of him but his Ireland chances are all but gone at the age he's at.

Injury has been a curse for Partridge. His injury history meant that he was only ever going to get six month contracts too. As with many other players just when he got a sniff at Liverpool he got injured.
Its unlikely that he'll come home and play in the EL as his partner is English (Michael Owens sister). I think he had a choice of clubs when he signed for Sheffield Wednesday, Bristol Rovers being one of them.

Tottenham have no intention of releasing Kelly, in fact they have been trying to get him to commit. Clearly though he will be leaving - West Ham seem very keen.

    Add in Billy Clarke aswell.
Lordan is in negotiations with Rico.
City definetly have the best bands playing at half-time.

Royle was waxing lyrical about Clarke only a couple of weeks ago. Definitely not on his way out.

Cathal Lordan has apparently signed for Cork City. Not 100% on the details yet.

I don't think Stephen Kelly is in the released category.

I have to laugh at the partridge cheerleaders out in force again. If he was good enough a Championship club who just avoided relegation would not be releasing.

No surprise Barrett released as not good enough.

A lot of these players developed by top clubs might have been great when joined those clubs but 3-4 years of reserve team football & the very occasional loan move to lower leagues doesn't do much for development.
