Shearer's career is ended

Alan Shearer's career is over after scans on his knee injury confirmed his final season has been ended prematurely.

The Newcastle captain had planned to retire at the end of the 2005-06 campaign but a medial ligament tear has denied him the chance to play in the final three games.

The 35-year-old was injured in a challenge by Sunderland midfielder Julio Arca in last week's Barclays Premiership victory over Sunderland.

Shearer told The Sun: 'Deep down I knew when I limped out of the Stadium of Light that it was probably the end and I think the fans knew it as well.'

Shearer had scored his 206th - and now final - Newcastle goal from the penalty spot shortly before limping off in that win at Sunderland.

In all he scored 379 goals in 733 club appearances in an 18-year career which started at Southampton and also took in a high-profile spell at Blackburn where they won the title in 1995. He also scored 30 England goals in 63 caps

His legendary status at Newcastle was confirmed in February when he overtook Jackie Milburn to become the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

Shearer joined Newcastle from Blackburn for a then record £15million in 1996.

A phenominal striker, but I don't think I'll miss him - a filthy player who retired from international football at 29 (regardless of the crap he was getting as 'The England Captain') and was generally fawned on by the English media. Doubtless, we'll see him boring the crap out of whole countrys on the BBC in the future.

I was saddened to hear the news this morning. He set a great example for Newcastle and English football in general with a competitive streak that never let up.

True he wasn't perfect, though no man is, but his talent as a ruthless attacking threat will be sorely missed by the game.

nice to see him get the newcastle record before this struck but more for the long-suffering loyal support at that club, and certainly a player i will miss watching for his goals, but he lacked sportsmanship and had a thugish element to his character which was always glossed over for some reason in the media in england.
not shy with an elbow either, as i recall, but ran to the nearest microphone like a whinging beaatch if anyone had the audacity to match him like for like in this department, again this was mysteriously always backed up by the shearer friendly media, probably a prelude to the 'oldboy' network he will now take his place in.

a very decent old fashioned centre forward without doubt, and not wishing this to become a shearer bashing thread, but i would have to express serious and well founded doubt about the above quote in relation to this guy, with particular reference to the talents of one henry (amongst others) which we currently can enjoy in the english game.

My niece Bubbles went over to the WBA game today and she's right p!ssed that Shearer has retired. Bet her 20 euros that she wouldn't get his autograph or picture taken with him. Knowing her, she'll probably cause a riot trying to get to him so I'm watching BBC news with trepidation.

Seconded. I've never liked him - I think a fair few idolise him as the last 'great' British player - and we all know what the term 'British' infers in such instances....

Genuine tough guys of the game were probably turning in their graves when Shearer went on moaning..

I won't miss the guy either that's for sure. He was always an arrogant, dirty player with his head up his arse.His celebration for every goal he ever scored was always the same, an arm and a finger pointing towards the heavens. He just bored the shi*e out of me. Good riddens i say.

Over-rated player who whiloe great in his prime has done nothing in last couple of years. 17 league goals in last 2 seasons & i'd guess maybe even 1/2 were penalties.

Credit where it's due, he didn't score all those goals by being a bad player and there wasn't many better at finishing but I can't say I'll miss him. He had a lot of nasty incidents and his nastier side was always bubbling away under the surface.

I'll always remember when he kicked Neil Lennon right in the chops and got away with it, of coarse the media and the F.A. didn't make too big a deal of it with him being England captain at the time.
