    Another long season ahead....

Was it as bad as the scoreline suggests???
I phoned the speaking clock to hear a voice speak, it said - "At the tone you will be very much alone"

    Foot.ie!

To be truthful YES. Being honest here and saying that Galway are the poorest team I have seen this year. Have seen Dundalk, Kildare County and Shamrock Rovers. Can't judge Cobh as didn't make game. Think there was a fair few people there tonight that won't be in Terryland again this season. Looking forward to playing ye next season already.

If both teams were still there now they still wouldn't have scored. We spurned 2 great chances but alas like yourselves we have no real goalscorer.

Very poor performance from United, defensively we were good, considering
there were changes in defence from last week and on the night itself
through injury, but attacking wise we created very little. O'Dowd should
be picked to partner Murphy, he will get stuck in more, and given the form
he was in towards the end of last season he deserves to be playing.

There were too many long balls played from the back though, more in hope
rather than a game plan. We lacked someone to put their foot on the ball
and create something (J Russell is missed here).

We need to start turning things around soon or else all of the preseason
    hype will just be hype.

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH !!!!!!!

Thats what everyone was saying going out! I brought a good load of new faces to the match and not one of them will be returning again unfortunately! To be fair though when O'Brien came on he attacked them down the left, put in some good crosses along with winning some good free kicks and corners. I think there will be a lot of squad players thinking I can get on this team if thats the way they are performing. Hopefully Lal and Co. can bring us out of this slump we are in and turn things around.

Is there any good coaches around that would have been a striker in his day? This to me is the area we seem to lack most in at the moment, altough they arent getting a single decent ball played into them either! I dont know how many times I said to the lads last night " how I wish we still had Fortune".

    Ratings:

Keeper and defence were solid as always with maybe just 1 slip up where the athlone player broke clear and luckily sent his chip over Goughie just wide of the left post.

The midfield again were in defence mode and never really had any imagination or flair going forward. Bad news here is that Cretaro was carried off and it looks as if we wont be seeing him for the next while.

Alan and Barry worked hard up front but had to come into midfield to collect the ball. The chances on goal were tame but you could feel that if they were getting more chances a goal would come eventually.

Deserved draw for Athlone.Possibly one of the worst games ive ever seen in Terryland in front of over 1700 people.Absoloute crap!
GUFC have quality players but they are far from clicking at the moment.Limerick are flying but we comfortably bet them in Terryland so its hard to tell how it will pan out.Too many long balls at the moment for quality players like Murphy,no flair or pride from what i can see.
Athlone looked solid but dont have a goalscorer. They'll make it difficult for teams this year.....that's about it.But point well deserved.
Dundalk are now only one point behind us,after two wins and 4 losses. They'll be very strong contenders this year with Rovers, possibly Limerick.I think we'll do the usual and leave it too late and then make a challenge.
"i guarantee we'll win the league!" we all rememeber who said that.

That had to have been the worst performance from a Utd team in 5 years or so.

Q1 : Why is the Terryland pitch so bad for the beginning of our most important season?

It is an awful surface to play on. The players have no confidence in passing the ball 10 yards along the deck. It just bobbles everywhere so we were reduced to pumping aimless high balls against a physically stronger Town team. We'll be lucky to get 500 for the next game. Brought my mate from Dundalk with me for 2nd home game and he is adamant he won't go back cos there's nothing worth watching, especially now cretaro is injured.

Q2 : Why wasn't Alan Keane brought on at half time for Keady?

It's a straight swap, Gavin was awful, and now Cretaro will miss a few weeks because of it. I know the subs were enforced changes, but could he not have brought Murphy back into centre midfield to try and get on the ball and pass it. Cooke, while trying hardest in the 1st half, is not centre midfield calibre.

On the flip side, it surely can't get any worse than that. Can it?

The Galway FA own the ground and as a result have first call on fixtures there. For example, there are two under-age games in Terryland on Monday 17th. Unfortunately, this always affects the pitch at this time of year as there are underage and junior finals to be held there. Out of our control

Yeah, but you said it a lot at the start of this season.

Are Galway fans unhappy with Lally or is it just you?

In fairness Sligoman i wouldn't rule us out yet.I still feel we have the best squad in this league....just underperforming. Its not entirely Lally's fault but whenyou make statements like that you have to deliver. We aren't at the moment. We will click and when we do we'll dispose of nearly every team in this league it's just a matter of gelling sooner rather than later.

    Thumbs down pretty bad

i know its a long way to go, but we have had over 2500 spectators at our first 2 games and we are not pretty, we have no midfield and i mean no midfield, some of the touches of the front players were lousy. The pitch is a state but its the same for both teams. it was very boring trying to watch that last night a lot of them wont come back. We have no cutting edge, sharpness or hunger. not impressed

What really p!sses me off is attitude. The players at GUFC are spoiled.
    For pre season they had
    -a trip to wycome
    -trip to Killary
    - they had a fitness programme in Corinthians
-they train in the best facilities in Connacht, possibly ireland
There is more priviliges im sure but i cant think of them off hand.Certain players would want to take the finger out ans show a bit of the club's motto....PRIDE PASSION PROFESSIONALISM
It doesn't appear evident in many.Instead of cribbing and whining about little irrelevant matters they should concentrate on giving it all for 90 minutes a week in return for the effort put in by many in this club and especially the supporters.Lally needs to get rid of anyone who is going to hindrance our advancement in to the premier league. No one player is bigger than GUFC.

have to agree with you conor

they are not up for it - even when they hit long balls last night they were never hit true - always a shank

super keeper twice stood on the spot in the first half when he should have been coming for the ball - looks like he still has the yips from the finn harps throw in

then in the second half - carter had to leave a ball 5 yards from him to let the super keeper run 30 to punt it - crazy stuff

they have damage limitation written all over them

    no confidence on the ball

the amount of times they were bunched on the wings with white shirts all over them trying to move up the wing and when one united player would be standing in acres in midfield with no one near them - the ball was never passed inside

bascically agree with all the opinions above

they lost a lot of fairweather support and potential support last night with that rubbish

the ref didnt help blowing up for evething - but still didnt issue any yellows for a lot of dissent and persistent fowling

galway had a bit of play before half time and then handed the initiative to athlone after the break

7 points behind - win the league your having a laugh

its our lack of creativity up front that is killing us

lets hope that we can start scoring goals soon

its still all to play for I think we are 3rd in the league even though we only won one game

every team in 1st division seems to be finding it hard to games back to back
    (bar rovers & limerick)

so 2 or 3 wins back to back should see galway utd in a fight for a top 3 finish

    come on utd

There isnt even quarter of the season gone

folks and already there is panic setting in in some quarters.

Ill bide my time until we have 11/12 games under our belt before ill be able to assess our prospects. The main problem as I see it is that we are set up not to concede goals and if we do score we tend to drop even deeper which was our downfall against Harps. We have to go out looking to take teams on and score goals besides taking 10 passes before we cross the half way line and we need to try out Davie O'Dowd up front as he finished last season in flying form and he also works his ass off something Barry,Alan & Eric seem loath to do at the moment.

Murph's should sticj to his attacking position as he keeps dropping way to deep and disrupting our midfield.

Keep the faith lads this division is wide open this season any team are capable of winning it.

i suppose with the talk up this season got - and the good finish to last season

expectation was we might hit the ground running - thats not the case so far

but i suppose remembering last season - we left it too late for a push

id expect if we do have a good run now - there will be a bad patch to come - just dont want that at the end of the season - and get caught out again

too many ifs and buts - long season ahead etc.

so either way win in kildare
    more water!
