    Match Programme

    Athlone Town match programme

    The Galway United match programme has gone from strength to strength since the start of the season and for the first time ever we will be featuring a full colour publication for our upcoming home game against Athlone Town. The cost is €2.50 and some of the articles to feature in the programme include,

    -Interview with Nigel Keady
    -On the western front
    -Your view with Tom Timothy
    -When last we met by keith Kelly
    Club website
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Wasn't long ago we were commending all those invoved with this years programme.It has to be said it is excellent....as good as many premier clubs,easily, and certainly a league apart to most in the 1st...including Rovers.
    looking forward to reading it.
    choppin and changing games is a no no
    friday night football is key as we have spent a fortune marketing it.
    in the context of league of ireland away support its non existent, rovers may be an exception but what will they bring 200 max and we will probably lose 100 of our own. choppin and changing games does no one any favours stick with the plan and at end of season then review with proper figures and decide your plan for the following year
    Rovers have already made an informal request to have the game changed.
    I am all in favour of assisting fellow clubs, but not to the extent that we alienate our own support (1017 at last home game).
    The GUST rep on the executive has voiced his disatisfaction with unneccesary fixture changes in the past and has also made it clear recently in relation to the above that changing a home fixture to facilitate another clubs travelling support would be counter-productive.
    Sorry NY Hoop !
    A few points.
    We have no say about tolka as we are renting.
    IMO fridays should be for local derbies as the hassle of getting time off for everyone to travel is too much.
    I wasnt aware of the concerts in salthill.
    Was just an idea off the top of my head considering it is a bank holiday weekend. IMO Harps, Sligo, Kilkenny and Longford lead the way with saturday night games.
    Agree NY Hoop.....Saturday's is easier to get to matches and there is alot of hassle getting to away grounds on Fridays.
    But the point we're making is we shouldn't change our date,simply beacuse Rovers will bring a bigger away support.Friday night is Terryland Park to the Galway public(well those who care anyway) and we should stick to it.We played on Saturdays before and it was a disaster.
    Having said that,there probably would have been no question of the game been called off last season......we were changing games nearly every second week.If you heard one or two of the reasons given.
    UCD have changed to saturdays aswell - to facilitate away support as they acknowledge they have very little of their own - especially supporters from down the country
    went to a bohs game there once and it was a home game for them
    more water!
    5.15 Saturday is great for away fans
    Away fans are a factor for Premier Division sides. Bohs, Cork, Derry etc would be expected to bring 100-300 to Terryland. Galway being a relatively attractive place to stay tends to increase the figure.
    In the First Divsion, Shamrock Rovers are the only club with consistently large support. You could count on the fingers of a Longford Town fans hand the average amount of supporters that Cobh Ramblers bring.
    Normally six.
    Now now Patrick. You are always picking on poor old Longford. Last time out, they brought 12 fans.
    Marketing students from NUIG carried out an extensive 40 page Maketing Research Analysis 3 years ago . The first question was:
    "Have you ever attended a Galway United game?
    This was followed by a series of related questions....
    " If not, why not?"
    "If yes, which day of the week would you prefer games to be played?"
    "What time would you prefer kick off time be?"
    The results were as follows:
    1.Friday, 2.Sunday, 3.Saturday
    It made very interesting reading and was presented by students to the Club. One of the students had no ointerset in soccer and one was not from Galway. All people were questioned on the streets of Galway because they felt that there was no point in asking people outside Terryland - it would be like preaching to the converted.
    Now, what has all of this got to do with the Match Programme?
