Another Stephen also springs to mind...
McGoldrick retires at a time Ireland needs him most. We're at a 50-year low - and he's playing the best football of his career. He either doesn't have the passion or Kenny lacks the necessary persuasive skills - or both. A disastrous WC campaign is very possible. It's not time to walk away. Failure to return, in my opinion, will reflect poorly on a player whose career was enhanced by international football.
Kenny made a statement at the beginning of his reign about James McCarthy and building a team around him
I really think he needs to get on a plane, covid or not( pretend you have a dental appointment) and tell McGoldrick he is vital to our success etc
Maybe he has weighed up the pros and cons of playing international football at his age / situation and thought = not worth it = maybe he is right ! !
About to come out of international retirement if Twitter is to be believed.

Not sure if Eirambler is referring to this or something else. But, if this is all true, it is rather interesting...
The Sun reports McGoldrick has not made contact with the FAI about a possible return.
Kenny has just confirmed on a fan Q&A that McGoldrick will not be back in

Ultimately, probably for the best. We need to start chucking the kids in, as Toshack and Coleman did with Wales a number of years ago to great (eventual) effect, and just hope for the best.
We've been utterly abject in at least 7 of the 8 matches we've played thus far under Kenny. We can't afford a proven, top-class coach. Even if this coming campaign proves to be (as I expect) a write off, at least a few young players will have gained international experience and there'll be some modicum of hope for the future.
