Yes the danger of those wide forwards is that they do come back to help too much and then don’t provide an outlet when we regain possession. Tracking back is good but we need at least two attacking players to stay in advanced positions to act as a check on opposing defenses and provide options for a pass.

Our only shot on target came with Long off the pitch

    Announced his international retirement: https://www.fai.ie/ireland/news/davi...nal-retirement
That really came out of nowhere.

Jaysus. What brought that on? End of a qualifying campaign?

Awful time for it too, with a record dearth of options up front (bar some promising if unproven kids)

A real kick in the teeth. suppose he would be 34 during a world cup but still he's a vital member of the squad. weird that he hasn't released a statement himself...

McGoldrick wasnt my favorite player to be honest but he a good pro so we will miss him in the short term. Time for the young fellas to step up and show they are good enough.

A disappointment but hopefully it accelerates the development of some of our young strikers. Also opens the door to someone like Hogan or Maguire who have disappointed so far but I believe could still be important for us, at least as a bridge before the likes of Idah and Parrott (hopefully) push on.

He wont be missed. Maybe Kenny told him that he would fast track the youngsters and he didnt want to remain on the bench. If thats the case thank you and bring another 9. I think this is a colective sport, he thought individually, pros and cons.

Shane Long, Cillian Sheridan and in a lesser chance Hogan and that Collins

Paddy Madden is a better option than Cillian Sheridan, along with about 15 other strikers...

Kenny needs to earn his crust now. Wait for a awhile then meet and convince him to do one more campaign. This guy is actually our best player believe it or not

I’m on two minds about this news. He’s one of those players who came late to the cause, and played as if every minute was making up for lost time. Heart, industry and no small measure of skill. I don’t think I ever looked at a line-up and thought ah, not him again, and it’s a measure him as a player and person that he seems to be held in great fondness here. But the role of a forward is to score or link play and create, and we’ve been deficient in both for a long time. So while I’m sorry to see him go because there’s still a lot he can offer, I’m hopeful that it will open the door to a player more in tune with Kenny’s style and nudge our evolution from up and at ‘em a little further along the line.
Hello, hello? What's going on? What's all this shouting, we'll have no trouble here!
    - E Tattsyrup.
