Are Serbia and Montenegro going seperate ways?

The former Yugoslavia is further falling apart in football. Montenegro and Serbia have requested to go seperate ways and each enter an own national team in the further UEFA and FIFA competitions. A referendum amongst other member countries will decide if the split will be approved.

If so, Serbia and Montenegro will still participate in the World Cup as one team, in the same way as the ex-USSR which entered the Euro 1992 with the GUS moniker.
Afterwards, if the split is being approved, Serbia and Montenegro will each be put in different groups for the Euro 2008 qualifiers. One of them will keep the spot in the group with Belgium-Finland-Poland-Azerbaijan-Portugal-Armenia-Kazachstan, the other will be added to another existing group. The innocent hand will decide upon which country keeps the current spot, and which group the other one is being added to.

Kosovo, the third state within the Serbia-Montenegro political entity, also has its own national team. Kosovo is hoping to affiliate to UEFA and FIFA soon, and is meanwhile entering the alternative World Cup for non-FIFA-countries. Kosovo already participated in a warm-up tournament for this alternative World Cup ; Kosovo played Northern Cyprus and Sapmi in this tournament and lost the final to Northern Cyprus.

Slight correction. The former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) competed in Euro 92 under the name of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The same designation was given to their teams that competed in the Winter Olympics in Albertville and Summer Olympics in Barcelona in the same year.

I reckon we'll see a lot of trouble as there is a Serb population living within Montenegro and they won't be happy at any breakways.

Montenegro has been independent at different times in history and has also been dominated by the Turks amongst others at different times.
President of the Montenegrin Football Association is one of the best ever Yugoslavia International players namely Dejan Savicevic!

There won't be any trouble if the Montenegrins seperate from Serbia because the Serbs go there on their holidays in very large numbers and the Montenegrins are excellent hosts being a very hospitable people . There has not been any animosity between the respective peoples in recent times. Apart from Crowd trouble at some footie matches that is

Oh and one last point.......The federations are unlikely to seperate ahead of a political referendum which is due to take place sometime this year!

Kosovo will unite with Albania if they ever gain independence so there will be no new team there!

Actually I just checked they were the Unified team in both Olympics but the CIS in Euro 92.

Let the nerdiness on the former USSR cease here.

Ah, but what was the compromise title conferred upon the selection representing the Czech Republic and Slovakia after their union was dissolved midway through the qualifying rounds for USA '94?
A leading authority on League of Ireland football since 2003. You're probably wrong.

The Representation of Czechs and Slovaks (RCS).

GUS could have been the Belgian for CIS?

CITD - what's the record for most consecutive posts by the same person in one thread?!

I don't know .. but I do know that foot.ie readers prefer a series of short postings rather than a laborious long winded one which meanders all over the shop on a series of different aspects of the same thread topic.

So why did you quote my entire post rather than just the part which was relevant to your answer?

Thats what will happen politically. But on the field of play a 'Kosovo' team would be absolutley hopeless on the pitch. NK Pristina their only decent team did play in the Yugo league up to 1998 and were absolute cak. Doubtless there will be any Serbs, Roma, Turks or Jews in the team since they've all been shot or ethnically cleansed.

Kosovo & south west Serbia (Albania), Montenegro (independent), south east Serbia (Bulgaria) Vojvodina (Hungary, Croatia & Romania) Sandjak (Bosnia)...

Jaysus if this keeps up the Serbs will be barely able to field a 5-a-side team.

Talk about getting royally fvcked by the EU, Yanks and NATO.

Please don't politicise the thread. If you want to discuss the non-footballing implications of the possible disintegration of SCG then take it to the current affairs forum.

Ah Partizan it won't disintegrate to that extent. SE Serbia will not join Bulgaria. Sandjaks have been Serbs for centuries won't be joining Bosnia. Vojvodina has almost as many Serbs as it has Hungarians these days and in the worst case scenario Greater Belgrade is big enough pool of talent to field an international team on it's own.

It's the quest for accuracy. After all journalists don't do any research these days so somebody has to do it for them
