Post eircom League Move The Goalposts

Red card ruling changed for friendly games
The eircom League has announced a change to the way suspensions are handed out. Stuart Malcolm of Dublin City, David Crawley and Greg O’Halloran of Shelbourne, Chris Turner of Sligo Rovers and Jimmy Fyffe and Darren Young of Waterford United were all sent off in friendly games. Five of those players were due to serve one game suspensions in the coming weeks but now the eircom League has announced one of its most bizarre rulings.

Players sent off in friendly games will now serve a one game suspension from the club's next friendly game. Those six players sent off in pre-season will now not miss a competitive game because of the red card.

    More Shels corruption.
Fair enough. Getting banned for a full league match was fairly stupid but carrying it over to another friendly is a bizarre compromise. Maybe they could have counted it as a yellow at the start of your disciplinary year or better again just gotten rid of it.
Players shouldn't be sent off in friendlies anyway but ordered to be substituted a la Georgie vs Limerick.
City definetly have the best bands playing at half-time.

To be honest i have no problem with what they have done, its a bit strange and seems like alot more work for something that could be really simple. Where i have the problem is them making the move now .... after the games took place, that is totally off the wall decision.

That's my opinion as well. There's an element of making the rules up as we go along.

If a player is suspended for the next friendly and forget (which they will) and play in the following season's pre season games will the club be docked three friendly points for fielding an ineligable player?

Down with this sort of thing.
Now that Shelbourne have the unique talents of David Crawley for one extra league match, nothing can stop them!

Seemingly they're not making up the rules as they go along, they just didn't know their own rules as usual. Shels helpfully reminded them that a Cobh player sent off in a pre-season friendly against Shels a couple of years back was not suspended from any competitive games. The League went "Oh yeah you're right. Caught us out again. We really don't have a clue what we're doing" (I'm not sure if this is a direct quote). Well done to Shels for kicking up their usual fuss. Now at least we have a keeper for tomorrow night. We may need him

    Thumbs down Shels corruption

FFS this is ludicrous. How can you make a rule change 1 DAY before the new season starts that has immeadiate affect? The logical thing to do would be make players serve their suspensions using existing rule & then say that new rule takes affect from tomorrow.

Not even commenting on the timing, I think the rule itself is ridiculous. To get sent off in a friendly is an utter disgrace and deserves at least as equal punishment as a red in a competitive game. I think anyone sent off in a friendly deserves a competitive ban.

Surely the players who have been sent off have already played in another friendly so they were in breach. It's so confusing and ridiculous but hey it's the eircom league!!

Also this idea of carrying points forward from last season to this season is a joke. Fair enough players who were sent off but not players who got a yellow in the last few games to take them over a threshold

As pointed out, it was actually a Cobh player who didn't serve a suspension two seasons ago. No rule change, just a case of enforcing the one already used. Stop being so paranoid. TWO years ago the Cobh player was sent off. A Cork team, you don't see us all getting X-Files on Cobhs ass cos they didn't get the player suspended.

Seesh. Thank god the footie starts tomorrow so you can get busy talking about that!!

But what about the scandal, the conspiracy theories, the rumour and counter-rumour. There are so many plots and so little time … what will become of it all … no speculation, no assumption or conjecture ??

It'll be a different place and very convenient for Shels

Stupid rule in the first place, pity their last minute changing of it may cost Shels though but such is life.
