0-0 final score. Mahon had a 30 yarder disallowed for offside. Tony Mac had 3 narrowly wide headers in the 1st half. Pineapple says we dominated and Podge and Dicker linked well.
Lineup according to Pineapple: Quigley, Mahon, Ryan, Kenna, McNally, McDonnell, Hurley, McEniff, Ciaran Quinn (new signing from Monaghan), Cawley, Conan Byrne.
Subs: Dicker, Shorthall, Finn, Matthews, McWalter, Sammon, Unknown

How did Unknown do when he came on as a sub?
Why was 'Unknown' responding to a name very different than that which was listed for him on the teamsheet?

I tihnk it was Derek Doyle. Numbers 19 and 20 weren't called out. I have no idea what was on the teamsheet, but surely it hardly matters for a friendly?
On a side note, Athlone were actually charging full price in! Surely this isn't usual practice for friendly games?

Aaron McEniff told us at the Kilkenny match that it was he who scored the disallowed goal in the Athlone game.
Well it doesn't matter as in it's a friendly so you can play who you want. So why bother putting down a different name is my question? Maybe it was a late injury.Originally Posted by pineapple stu
19 and 20 weren't called out because they weren't listed. 20 was being called Doyler. If anyone wants the names for stats, the subs listed were:
12 Dicker, 13 McWalter, 14 Shortall, 15 Salmon, 16 Cloghessy, 17 Harte, 18 Matthews.

UCD continued their pre-season with a 0-0 draw in Athlone, in a match where the Students had the lion's share of possession but failed to really create much with it. Athlone rarely threatened going forward, but defended well against a UCD team missing only the rested Gary Dicker from their likely full-strength line-up.
On a freezing cold night in Athlone, UCD settled well, with Darragh Ryan putting in some dangerous crosses. Indeed, the Students had the ball in the net after just 15 minutes when an Aaron McEniff shot from 30 yards found its way into the top corner, but the goal was quite incredibly rule dout for offside. Ryan's crosses were causing the Athlone defence plenty of problems, and Tony McDonnell headed narrowly wide on no fewer than three occasions in the first half.
Ironically, the best chance of the first half- disallowed goal aside - fell to Athlone, who had a shot off the bar and into the grateful arms of Darren Quigley shortly before half-time.
UCD made five subs at half-time, and another two shortly afterwards, including the introduction of Gary Dicker, who immediately made his presence felt in the centre of the park alongside Tony McDonnell. With the introduction of Pat McWalter as well, UCD looked dangerous on a number of occasions, and the Athlone defence had to be sharp to deny McWalter from going clean through onto a perfectly-weighted through ball from Dicker.
Overall, though, the frailties in front of goal appear to be still evident, although any conclusions on the match must be tempered by the fact that it was a pre-season friendly.
UCD - Quigley; Mahon, Ryan, Kenna, McNally; McDonnell, Hurley, McEniff, Cawley; Byrne, Quinn. Subs - Dicker, Shortall, Finn, Matthews and Doyle for Hurley, McNally, Cawley, McEniff and Kenna (all h/t); Sammon and McWalter for Byrne and Quinn (60)
Technically then, Doyle wasn't listed as a different name...?Originally Posted by atfconline

Fair enough. We must be unusual in usually not charging so.
Well, he was wearing 16 on his shorts! And not being listed at all isn't exactly much better!Originally Posted by pineapple stu

We presumably don't have shorts with number 20 (or number 19, for that matter).
