3 if you add Rooney. I'm genuinely fearful this time, though hopefully (for me anyway) all the usual failings will remain.

I was out with an English Chelsea fan on Friday & he admitted as much. He was giving me guff for dressing my 5 month old son in an Irish rugby shirt during the France v Ireland game which we watched with our wives. He seriously maintained that by being born here made him English, no arguement. I queried Kevin Pietersen's Englishness & he bcaked down.

Chelsea's support is largely drawn from right-wing xenophobic home county yobs. I was at White Hart Lane in 1987 when their fans brought Nazi Swatikas and made hissing noises throughout the game. Nice.

They're not just conservative Neil, they're ultra far right.

And those that aren't yobs are newly rich City bankers who live nearby!

Also Clifford, Did the once feared Man Utd not win the European Cup something Chelsea have not done.
Once there was A.BU,s who have gone away quitly be cause there isn't alot to shout about.
we are a nation who are never happy with winners all we want to do is knock them and put them down. But once chelsea has lost and lost the debate will go with them.
So I say come on Chelsea keep winning and they will keep slaging you off.

AS regards the Chelsea match the Blues deserved at best a draw and might well have got it had they had 11 players for 90 minutes against Barca.

As regards England winning the World Cup, the current England squad is not as good as either the 1970 or 1966 squads. For one there isn't a goalkeeper as good as Peter Bonetti never mind Gordon Banks. And football has moved on a lot from then. However England could with a bit of luck make the last 8 or last 4.

The plot thickens, Ronaldinho hobbles off with what looks like it might be a bad injury type of thing tonight.

(Off topic: E'too, in a proper gesture in my book, was going to walk off the pitch in retort to some sick racist chanting. All his team had to persuade him to remain on the pitch, he did so and set up the second with a stunning cross to Larsson. When will the Spanish fa do something about this? The stadium announcer tried to stop it, but this made them worse)
The above is all opinion and based on personal experience. Unless stated otherwise it is not a dig at anybody, well probably none of you lot.

    straight talk

The lastest around stamford bridge is Josie isn't happy with Del horno, had Gallas been fit he would only have made the bench.
It seems clear now after his sending off he Dell boy is head out the gates of Chelsea at the end of season.
It has already been said he on the way back to Spain, where I sure he will be most happy.
Mourinho has no confidance in the player he also refected this in Saturday match against Portsmouth by bringing on The Irish man Damien Duff
and played him at Left back.To add further insult he sent out Steve Clarke for Post Match interview. the plot thickens

By the way the League is good as over Well done to Man U. give them some thing to cheer about. this was the team that said pre season they will be fast out of the traps well this is the only silver ware they will win this year and are certain to be in Europe by winning the League Cup.

    Chelsea v Barcelona

Passing a comment regarding Chelsea fans and right wing connections is cheap and NEILMCD clearly has a huge chip on his shoulder .Can you not come up with anything better than that while writing your smug comments .

Its comical reading the Chelsea bashers ,and their jealously at our success stands out a mile . Heres a few facts .

Chelsea can 'buy any player they want'. Overlooking the fact that they failed to buy Henry, Gerrard, Shevchenko, Adriano, Joaquin (to name just 5 world class players).

Frank Lampard and John Terry are 'pure English blood and guts footballers' of the highest order, but they play in a team of spineless millionaires (does not compute)

When a rival player/manager says he thinks his side can win the league, he is confident. when a chelsea player/manager says the same, he is arrogant.

When chelsea get into a dispute withy another side, uefa/fifa, it is the start of the new cold war. When liverpool do this, they are launching a "passionate defence".

Michael Essien is a psychopathic brute who should be banned for the next 5 years, whereas Roy Keane, Patrick Viera and Alan Shearer epitomise the physical 'get-stuck-in' joie de vivre of the Premiership .You'd think Michael Essien invented a dirty tackle the way everyone keeps on about it.

Osgood, join the fellas you're whingeing about there on another thread.
This one is about the Chelsea Barca match.
    The plot thickens.
Gallas may be out through injury for the return leg and with Bridge out on loan, their back line is going to be a bit unsettled.
How about Jose throwing caution to the wind and playing a 3-4-3 or something?
Definitely worth a punt seeing as they need to outscore Barca rather than concentrate on holding them scoreless.

City definetly have the best bands playing at half-time.

O'Bama - "Eerah yeah, I'd say we can alright!"

MOD - PLease don't quote whole posts

I dont have a chip on my shoulder. Just as a neutral I like to see the team that tries to playing good football win. Barcelona are much better to watch than Chelsea so therefore I would go for them. The same way I was ****ed off that Porto Greece and Liverpool all one major competitions playing football to fall asleep to. To be honest the Champions League Final last year was great but in the main Liverpool are bad to watch in the League and Europe.

Also forgive me for having a view about the political ideology of the club and the treatment of Irish players by its supporters. I am an Ireland fan first and foremost and if one of our players gets booed by his own club supporters for simply playing for Ireland well then I will speak up againsts it. The same way that players of fans speak out against racism.

I know the moderator wants the thread to be kept on topic but I can't ignore the comments from osgood & renovator above. This will be my last comment on the topic.

It's clear as day that Chelsea draw a significant element of their support from supporters of far right politics. That's by no means to say that anyone who follows Chelsea is tarred with the same brush. I admit wholly that it's something I'm more sensitive to than most. It's pretty much the same reason I dislike the English team, despite liking almost everything English.

But I still do my best to be objective. I'll give credit to Chlesea where it's due & criticise when I see fit too.

My dislike of Chelsea goes way back. To the anti-semetic filth I witnessed at Spurs in 1987, and generally throughout the Bates era. What an abhorrent individual. I'm not being partisan here either. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan but have quite an intense dislike for David Dein. Sadly, football is a great game but a despicable industry. Funnily enough, though I've great admiration for Wenger & gratitude for what's he's done for Arsenal, I'm often embarrassed by his myopia & bad sportsmanship. Same applies to Mourinho.

I'm also aware of a contingent of loutish, squaddie type support in the Arsenal ranks. Every club has yobs so it's not unique to Chelsea.

I also accept that it's largely arbitrary which English team Irish fans support so if you follow Chelsea that's fine by me. It must be a great time for you. My support for Arsenal is only partly explained by there being 6 Irishmen in their first team when I was a nipper. Long before you could buy replica kits, my anorak lining was red with white sleeves so I turned it inside out & it was an Arsenal shirt. Who knows who I'd support if it was blue!

As regards the comment on Irish people knocking success: I doubt it's uniquely Irish. Of course Chelsea's success & wealth turns people against them. Everyone hated MUFC when they were dominant, and Liverpool before them. I was firmly in the ABU camp. But once it became apparent that Chelsea were league contenders I immediately made the judgment that I'd prefer MUFC over Chelsea.

When Neil draws attention - accurately - to certain traits associated with Chelsea & he gets met with accusations of being smug & bitter or having a chip on his shoulder I've got to point out if I think this is off the mark.
