Rovers delight as council close Tallaght to GAA

The way has been cleared for Shamrock Rovers to move into the new municipal stadium in Tallaght. South Dublin County Council yesterday voted overwhelmingly in favour of completing the Tallaght stadium as an venue exclusively for soccer.
Despite some vigorous lobbying by the Dublin GAA's county board, 22 councillors voted in favour of the plans, while only four voted against. The decision to keep Gaelic games out of the venue has cleared the way for government funding to be freed up for the stadium. The builders are now expected to begin work within weeks.
It is thought that another E4million will be required to complete the stadium, which will hold 6,000 people when completed and Shamrock Rovers could be playing home games there as soon as next September. However, a more likely date for the opening of the stadium is the start of the 2007 season.
The possibility has also arisen in recent weeks that St Patrick's Athletic could come on board and share the ground with Rovers. This would mirror the proposal that Bohemians and Shelbourne would share Dalymount Park. The two northside clubs have already had some exploratory talks on the subject.
In a statement, Rovers' chairman Jonathan Roche said: "Today is a great day for Shamrock Rovers and we can't wait to bring Eircom League football to Tallaght and finally provide our magnificent supporters with a place we can call home.
"This exciting news means that we can continue our on-going plan of transforming Rovers into a community-based football club, as well as bringing the Hoops back to the southside.
"Our club has been forced to reside temporarily in various locations around Dublin ever since we lost Glenmalure Park in 1987. After a nightmare 19-year wait, Shamrock Rovers are finally heading home," said Roche.
"We would also like to thank the Minister, John O'Donoghue, and all the other elected representatives who have supported Shamrock Rovers and the Tallaght Stadium Project throughout this lengthy process."
