    Reality Talent Shows - You're a Star

Are any of you watching You're a Star?? I started watching it 2 weeks ago in my friends house and I have to admit there is some real talent on it (and some well dodgy singers) I usually hate these stupid shows..

Louise Killeen from Offaly writes and sings her own songs, while she isn't a great singer, some of her songs are great.
Lucia Evans from Galway is my Favourite to win, she has such a powerful voice, I've seen her in shows in Galway City a few times and she is class..

BUT the problem with this show is it's a public vote and these really bad singers are being kept in by their friends and family voting for them, and the real talent gets pushed out!!

What do you think of these shows, are they ruining the music industry by producing manufactured pop bands and singers or are they a way of finding real talent and giving people a chance that would never have the opportunity otherwise!?

They are the ones who brought us Donna and Joe McCall ,Mickey Joe Heart, Liberty X (Losers of the show that Hearsay won) and Girls Aloud...

If you look at the words you've used, you should be able to justify these "talent" contests.

Pop music is the disposable product of the music industry and therefore is never expected to be of high quality or have any durability.

From a manufacturing perspective, these shows are the ultimate development tool. You get your target audience to decide on the particular product they want, wrap it up and sell it back to them. It's a no lose situation. Your product is already market tested before you've even invested in it.

From these shows alone, I'd imagine your product gets exposure to at least 90% of its target market without having to spend money on market research or advertising.

But if you look at the winners of these shows where are they now, with the exception of two Girls Aloud and Will Young there are Donna and Joe McCall, Mickey Joe Heart, Hearsay, Six, Michelle McManus and plenty more who I can't even remember where are these people now!! They seem to have one hit and then disappear only to turn up on some z list 'Celeb' reality show, if that..

This process doesn't seem to be successful (from the point that nearly all the winners turn out to be flops) But I'm sure the shows themselves are making plenty of money from all the texts and calls..
So is that the point of these shows, to produce a successful TV show or to find hidden talent??

Would agree there a quite a few talented singers on it, and a few talanted songwriters but its more of a popularity contest than a talent contest IMO. The winners are usually the ones who have the bigest family, relations and friends to vote for them regardless of the fact they are the most talented.

Anyhow I think the name of the show should be changed from You're a star to You will be a star for about 6 months to a year then its back to the day job for you.

its all about the show , this is why the judges play up to a role , one nasty one nice one that flips between the two , the best bits are when the judges are slagging off people .

what happens is the show makes a fortune the winning act normally gets a number 1 single out of it and if they can rush out a second single or album before the next talent show starts then they may get some sales on the album .

but because the winning act does nt write or produce any of the songs most of the money goes to the label / writters then the act gets dumped normally make s about 150,000 out of it but thats all then goes into panto !!! .

Try not to watch this type of Shyte but did watch fame academy a few years ago when Alex Parks won it. now she is seriously talented and has at last got a real recording deal ( she pulled out of the recording deal she won as part of the show as they forced her to have 9 covers out of 12 tracks on her debut album Introduction) her second album is due out in the summer and I for one cant wait

Its to create successful tv shows. Music success hardly matters.

Ahem, maybe not exactly the best financial decision she ever made though...

The fact that you were looking forward to her second album which is already out would seem to back up her point that she's been getting very poor support from her record label's PR machine.

As I don't watch X faxtor or american Idol I'm not going to bother with their yellow pack home grown equivalent.

Despite hate hate hate hating the Eurovision I'm sad they've decoupled the two as it was a cast Iron guarentee that we'd never win the fcuker again -Scarcely needed a guarentee I know but it's good to be doubly assured.

The 'push' factor that gets people voting in these yokes is similar to that which makes them enter tidy towns competitions.

What about your one Jeanette the waitress? Last four of You're A Star and she goes on the batter gets so ossified she falls over and breaks her nose when out for a fag in the middle of Dublin in the small hours of the morning. The contestants were warned not to go out on the razz as they had a busy day ahead of them for the show. You'd think with that much at stake and that close to the final stages and within reach of a prize she could have exerted just a smidgeon of self control and gone home at closing time!

Congratulations to Lucia Evans on winning the You're A Star last night. She has been brilliant throughout. I think the chosen song is absolutely dreadful and she made it almost bearable! The Sullivan brothers couldn't get to grips with it so it did them no favours. They're certain to get a recording deal of their own and are better off not having such a rubbish song as their first single.

Heard a text read out by Ian Dempsey this morning where someone said "Well done to the Sullivan brothers. They were flying the flag for Ireland."
What a sad thing to say. I hope that person wasted a fortune on trying to get the Sullivan brothers through.

Shows like this don't work here because of the regional voting mentality outside of Dublin.

However, in fairness to the show, the new George Murphy single is actually very good.

Saw a snatch of it - did I see a nice young wan (the ex boxer ) having a go at Led Zeppelin's Rock 'n' Roll?? Trouble is she had a job hitting the higher notes but TBF she had a real go at it. She was off key far too often as well. Really pleasant lady and it took guts to have a go at that song.

Don't think it was the right song for her. Do the participants get advice on what songs suit them and their vocal range??

She's 18 and very full of herself by the looks of it.
She chose that song herself and just from listening to her, you get the impression that she takes advice from no one because she already knows everything and thinks she's fantastic. I blame the parents!

The Sullivan brothers did a great version of an Eagles song.

    What???? She a Corky Girl???

Seriously, chosing that song was a bad move. You need a voice like a foghorn for that - an Anastacia type voice. I didn't like the Galway girl's version of Nothing compares to you much either. It was solid but again the wrong song for her. Lovely looking girl but then all Galway girls are.

    Both girls are from Galway.
Over the course of the show they all sang songs which showed their ability to extend their voices over a wide vocal range. Some managed it better than others.
