    Cork consider Galvin swoop

eircom League champions Cork City are weighing up a move for All-Ireland-winning Gaelic footballer Paul Galvin.
Galvin is currently sidelined by a six-month GAA suspension as a result of a confrontation with a referee following a club match in November.

But that ban will have no relevance outside Gaelic games, and Galvin impressed in a trial game for the Leesiders at the weekend, scoring in an in-house trial match.

Richardson told the Irish Examiner: “He’s a natural athlete, has good ball skill and co-ordination. We’re going to give him another game.

“He hasn’t played a competitive game in some time, so he was a bit short of fitness in the end. We took him off with about 20 minutes to go, but he didn’t look out of place.”

Rico thinks there are only two players in the EL good enough for city yet this guy is good enough?

Our league is in a right state if someone not playing soccer is better then all but two of the leagues players.

What exactly does Rico think of this league?

lives in Cork because he teaches here so travel wont be an issue, not to sure about this one though if it happens,we should be getting good players who've proven themselves, at least in the premier division

He clearly wouldn't be offered a fulltime role in the squad so Rico wasn't comparing him to the eL.

Seeing the difference in strength an fitness would be interesting. If we're honest about it we all know that the level of fitness and overall professionalism at Kerry are way ahead of where City are at. Galvin might bring a few ideas with him.

have you seen him play- how do you know he is not as good as the majority of EL players and simply chooses to play football.

And Rico never said that there were only 2 players good enough for city- he said there were only 2 players he thinks would improve the team....there is a big difference

If you wanna listen to any of the audios on the official City site, you'll find that Rico have never minced his words and is always straight up about his opinion on league matters ..... and the guy is a rock of sense !!
The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

Well in a study between eL players and GAA players last year it was found that eL players were fitter, and to say that Kerry are way ahead of City in fitness and professionalism is an overstatement and more likely than not inaccurate.

I agree. Fitness levels at top eL sides has vasty improved. Wasn't too long ago irish teams in Europe been given the run around by those foreigners. Was interesting to see Ekranas were exhausted in the away leg in Lithuania & City easily matches Djungardens in both legs. Salvia Prague had more pace & skill but not real difference in stamina.

I know we've had all this before, but I still think the difference is in conditioning - upper body strength and all-round fitness, not just stamina (cv fitness). Top GAA players are on planned and monitored weights programmes -with eL players its still mainly up to themselves. Rico made the point himself after the Slavia match.

Anyway, as Peadar said ... maybe the next Dave Barry

Obviously GAA players have greater upperbody strength, they use their arms more in their game & its not as important in soccer. Im not saying that its not an advantage but its not vital either.

GAA has more in common with rugby than football. Strength is more important than speed (if you had to pick one or the other) in GAA & rugby.

Point I'm making is that fully pofessional football clubs in Europe have full conditioning progrmmes for their players, including weights programmes. GAA has adopted this type of professional approach from football AND rugby, but eL is still way behind. All I'm saying is that top GAA teams ar more scientific about fitness than eL...I suppose having basic training facilities helps
