Connell off to a dream start

AUSTRALIAN teenager Paul Connell marked his Cork City debut with a goal with his first touch at Fort Hill in Kinsale, yesterday.

Cork won this pre-season friendly against the local opposition 4-0 with the other goals coming from John O’Flynn, Jamie Nolan and Roy O’Donovan. But the story behind Paul Connell’s arrival had an ironic twist to it in that it was Kevin Doyle’s Reading who recommended him to the league champions. The 18-year-old striker could not get a work permit in England and is effectively on trial with City with a view to securing a contract. Connell showed pace and bravery up front to get on the end of Cillian Lordan’s cross to head in City’s fourth goal with his first touch after coming on.

Cork were 3-0 up at the break after goals from O’Flynn, Nolan and the impressive O’Donovan gave them their second win in as many days after a 10-goal rout of Cahir Park on Saturday. Kerry footballer Paul Galvin was one of several changes made by City at half-time. James “Jammer” Cummins also tried out with Cork against Kinsale yesterday.

The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.
