now... im going purely on surname here but does anyone know of the existence of a green granny for any of the following?

    Gavin McCann
    Gareth Barry
    David Dunn
    Michael Carrick
    Aaron Lennon

it would be better to net a couple of these rather than lower league players if we are going to take this approach
Think Gareth Barry has a full cap for England. Good left back though

    Correct:
    ---------------------
Birmingham manager Steve Bruce has signed his son, Alex, from Blackburn Rovers. Bruce Jnr is a current U21 international, qualifying because of a Northern Irish grandmother. He has signed a two and a half year contract, but will first see out his current loan deal at Oldham, which ends in March. Alex can play in central defence or midfield.
    -----------------------
He went on loan to Sheffield Wednesday. He's a stick. Any man who signs his son from other club and who is brutal deserves to get the sack. Nepotism - I hate it.

As a Sunderland fan Liam Lawrence should be a shoe in into the squad. . Has been in excellent form as of late as is starting to score a few as well .. Could solve our problem on the right of midfield .. Andy reid has not figured much so Lawrence will hopefully be given a run ...

Like I said, I think we discussed this before so I'm not gonna talk about it anymore José.
Life without Rovers, it makes no sense...it's a heartache...nothing but a fools game. S.R.F.C.

i dont thhink we should go cap in hand for any of these players , if they did have irish lineage surely they would have declared for us a long time ago if they did feel any irish affinity

I think "Liam"( as well as Kieran and Conor) is just becoming a common name now, like Brian or Kevin, and generally doesn't denote any Irish connections.

    I'll come clean lads

Stan rang me up today, sourcing me out to see if I was eligible to play for the team and seeing if I would be up for bamboozling the opposition.

    I'm considering it.

What about Patrick Kohlmann at Dortmund, was he already in the U21 squad last year?

List of all players in MLS:
    http://www.mlsnet.com/MLS/players/
Of those I'm pretty sure who have not been capped with Irish sounding names (dont know if they actually qualify):

Michael Bradley (defensive midfielder who has just joined a teamin Holland)
    Jon Conway goalkeeper
    Jim Curtin center back
    Mike Magee midfielder/forward
    David Mahony gk
    Danny O'Rourke defensive midfielder
    Michael Parkhurst center-back(parents from Ireland)
    Tim Regan full back

O'Rourke, Bradley and Parkhurst are very good young players, the rest are so-so.
"Jacques Santini...will be greeted in every dugout of the country by "one-nil, one-nil" - Clive Tyldsley, 89th minute of France-England June 13, 2004.
"Ooooohhhh Nooooooo" Bobby Robson 91st minute.

I don't think McSheffrey is eligible, he played for England at U20 level and is now 23. The fact that he represented England is enough for me and I don't mean that negatively.

To be honest as we have so much young talent coming through I would almost prefer Stan to try and find some mature players through the granny rule as I think we need a bit of maturity and leadership, another Townsend would be very nice, thank you vm.

Just read that piece in the Indo. You've got to admire the guy's principles.
    "Can I have a Kit-Kat, chunky?"

    "you mean a big one"

"No a normal kit-kat you fat bitch"

Huge respect for Kitson not using dubious irish link thats over 100 years old.

I also read in the Indo with embarishment the way Staunton is touting the irish international team to anyone worldwide with any link. I also thought it was pathetic the way he asking football fans to alert him in Australia & the US. If he doesn't have a good enough scouting network himself then he shouldn't be manager. Looking for players in Australia is an insult to the eL.

I agree with you there. Fine let's use the granny rule like we've done in the past but we don't need to advertise the fact. It's one thing to take advantage of the rule but peddling the green shirts to anyone with an Irish connection just adds to riddicule we normally receive. It was bad enough him mentioning it at the press conference...

Yes he doesn't come across as the subtle type! While it is necessary in our case to some degree to source players, it is bullsh!t to ask fans to alert him. Fully agree with what you say Pete.
Here they come! It’s the charge of the “Thanks” Brigade!

Staunton is trying to dig up as many players as possible. Of course not all will be International standard.
There are plenty of Americans and Australians playing in Europe too don't forget. The more players available the better.
