I don't think anyone is disputing that. But if they are employing as professional a set up as possible then the scouts surely should have all the angles covered anyway.
Just look at Patrick Kohlmann who played in a few of the underage squads while living in Germany. Dortmund he played for I think?
Also didn't the youth set-up recruit a Dutch keeper (U-17?) who had no resemblence of an Irish name a year or two ago.
Here they come! It’s the charge of the “Thanks” Brigade!

If they are not good enough for those countries how could they be good enough for us?

IMO major own-goal by Staunton but what do you expect when he basically a trainee manager.

Lou Macari has already said he scouted the UK & there weren't many players better than current squad. Obviously Staunton might have a different opinion on some players but its ludicrous to think will find a star no one hard of already.

I think this is just part of a process of not accepting that current squad is as good as we have so we bring in new players & takes a year to figure out they crap too.

why was the criticism of the stars so strong

all he said was he didnt think footballers who arent irish shouldnt play for ireland......

its hardly ridiculous even in the age of some brazilian claiming to be japanese

1 of the players being touted

kevin nolan:will not declare he is "irish" because he is waiting to see if england will take him first

a lot of the others are similar to that

dave kitson doesnt believe in the granny rule, good for him

i could play for northern ireland or england[ ] but if lawrie sanchez or sven goran errikson came to my door id just sven, put your clothes back on and get out of my room,im selling my story

i dont agree fully with what he said, but i didnt feel as strongly as you lads did[probably cos we'r just friends ]

and that guy that called him a w@nker

    well foot.ie is the strictest boards ive ever known so god knows how that got through,too much flirting with sligoman mods...but anyway that guy is a kn0b:}

    thank you !

    see you on the road

Staunton wont get too many players that are up to international standard at the minute, but what he may get are players that will develop into international players.

Mine was that he made a statement that was insulting to people who consider themselves Irish, whom the state considers themselves Irish and quite a few people in the country of birth, but have never lived in Ireland. Fact is I have the same passport as you or him and didn't have to go through declarations of allegience, citizenship tests, etc. He wasn't having a pop at opportunist cap baggers, which if he did, I'd have no problem with. He's had over a 1000 posts on here. He knows that 2G Irish frequent the board. Why make such a statement and expect no reaction?

Oh and BTW, you're sounding a bit of kn0b yourself too.

I agree with Lopez as I thought The Stars comments were out of order too. Not sure how you can find Wild Rovers post deluded.

has anybody stopped you from speaking or posting on the board. U can't claim the freedom of speech argument as nobody as stopped you from posting just some have unwisely called you unsavoury names. Also freedom of speech is not infinite. With freedeom of speech comes responsibility. I am not sure people on this forum would agree that we should have totall freedom of speech.

Your post was attached not just cause it was offensive but also cause it lacked any intellectual back up or did not contribute to an intelligent debate.

heres Staunton from eleven a side about potential recruits

Reading, Coventry stars to earn Irish approach

    January 18, 2006

Free-scoring Reading striker Dave Kitson and Coventry City playmaker Gary McSheffrey will both be approached about the possibility of declaring for the Republic of Ireland, new Irish boss Steve Staunton has revealed.

Kitson has formed a potent alliance with Irish youngster Kevin Doyle for the Royals this season, the pair plundering 24 league goals between them to spur Steve Coppell’s side nine points clear at the top of the Coca-Cola Championship table.

McSheffrey has likewise been in good form for his hometown club Coventry City, playing all but one of the Sky Blues’ 29 league games and scoring eight times.

Staunton made it clear earlier this week that he would implement the “granny rule” in a bid to boost his options, with Swansea City’s Lee Trundle and an as yet unnamed Aston Villa youngster also linked with Irish careers.

The new boss said: “I’ll speak to Dave Kitson in the near future and see what his position is. Lee is scoring goals, is 29 and you never know what will happen. I’m not ruling anybody out at this stage.

“Gary McSheffrey also qualifies so he’s another lad we must take a close look at over the coming weeks and months.

“[New Irish coach] Kevin McDonald is already checking out a young lad at Villa at the moment to see what his position is. He’s from Australia but has Irish connections.”

Lads, can we not have another one of these endless ****ing citizenship/entitlement/granny rule arguments. we've been over it a thousand times and this one added nothing new to it. Keep it to debating the players mentioned or the thread gets locked

To the two Sligo boys...I have the utmost respect for the guys on here who were born in England and classify them as Irish and in my eyes are as Irish as you and I.I have two children born in England and they are likewise just as Irish as you and I. If the grew up stating they were English, I would be very disappointed but I would not think any different off them..If your cousins in England choose to be English, then that’s their choice. So grow up and have a bit of respect for people.
