It stinks of post-Celtic tiger spoilt brat syndrome & quite frankly I'm sick to the back teeth of it. Maybe we set too high a standard for ourselves in terms of expectation during the Charlton years but can we not keep it simply, wish Stan the very best and be optimistic. I don't want to appear naive in saying this and am under no illusion that the euro qualifiers will be easy but for god's sake lets not kick this to death before kick-off...
To quite Shakespeare "Something is rotton in the core of Merrion Square"

This is what I am so angry about. Staunton in my opinion got the job because he is a personal friend of Delaney, not on merit.

To use the term Post Celtic Tiger Spoilt Brat syndrome.....what in the name of Jasus is that about? You must be a sociology student or something? Are you ahappy to accept that we always go out as unlucky losers? Is give it a lash your philosophy?

I hate to say it but one phrase springs to mind reagring our hopes of success over the coming years and the end result of this "head hunt"

It seemd to be a load of PR waffle. I knew staunton played in world cups for ireland already. tell us something we dont know. seemed to be just put in there to create a positive association with him in the minds of the public."remember giants stadium? eh? eh? could happen again you know...." the least we expect from him is that his teams will be puttin in some hard graft. is that all there is to it? I wouldnt care less if he did or didnt mention the eircom league. but I feel it is strange that he did and I would be interested to see how many players from there that he ever actually picks in a competitive squad. so why mention it? pr waffle. And I do feel he is laying the seeds for failure to qualify for the euros. if thats not your reading of it fair enough. but I aint the only one who said it.I may have been a bit flippant in the last post so I apologise.
Klein, you speak a lot of sense...how is life in Slough? Are you supplying the mars bars to RD?

Agree totally. I can't wait for the draw. We may have 2 big sides in the group but can you imagine those games in Croker with 60-70k fans.

Hmmm, we had the best ever preparation in the last campaign and we had our worst qualifying position for 20 years. So much for that glib slogan.

My eye caught a headline in today's Evening Herald that Aldridge is peeved. Since he was my choice I would be interested to see what he has to say.

Just because Delaney is a friend of Staunton doesn't mean it was the wrong decision. Only time will tell on that.

I can't wait either. Besides the opposition fans and the few defeatists on this board (who are hoping for an "I told you so" moment), how many of the 60 -70k do you think will be hoping we lose?

What did you expect them to say? From what I've read the press conference was like any other introduction of a new manager. It was just about Public/Press Relations.

Ahem, that quote was directed at Delaney and the Lads "the end result of this headunt......." so, unless Staunton was on the selection committee(which is probably possible), how could my statement have referred to him? Please read all postings carefully. If you have any trouble understanding the English involved pm me

Owls Fan I read the article by Aldridge and he had no problem with Staunton getting the job. His only problem was with the FAI. They rang him in October and told him to keep two dates in January free for a meeting which were this week. He did not hear anymore from them. And the next he hears is that Staunton is appointed to the job. He was giving out about their treatment and how they conducted the appointment. However that was about 25% of the article, it was mostly about his backing for staunton and what he needs to do and the players that are out there that he should call up etc. It was more setting the record straight in what was reported during last week.

"No" to most of those questions.

I take a "glass half full" approach to this rather than lashing out with the whatever negative thoughts come to one's mind!

Certainly not a students esp not a sociology one (no offence if anybody is one!) but base that on a before and after observation and explanation is either understood or beyond the scope of this thread/discussion.

No matter whether you agree or not there's damn all you can do about it - and as much as I disagree with Delaney, non-football people making football decisions - we are not in an altogether bad place. i for one will continue to watch Ireland play at home and when i can't get to away games and will SUPPORT the team of my nation, as is my right to do!

No doubt we'll hear more of your contributions when the team starts both performing well and getting results (remember I'm an optimist!)

Yeah, I'm looking forward to this new "era" & to paraphrase Delaney (though I'm no fan) I've a good feeling about this one.......
Though agree with Paul OShea on the Croker thing

For Croker imagine Stade De France X 2, 60-70k Irish fans who know going into the game that we're underdogs and not expected to win. Being 4th seeds means we could have 2-3 of those games in Croker in the next campaign.
    Bring it on!!
