Well to be fair to jockser I think he was making the point that some people put public speaking as one of the main credentials you need to be a top class manager. There is no doubt that Bobby Robson was fare more comfortable infront of the media than Stan was. But by all accounts from the journalists on the Hub last night, the minute he did one on one interviews Staunton was very talkative and informative. The players certainly responded to him in 2002 as that team was pretty average without keane but Staunton showed leadership skills after the debacle of Saipan. I think that is more important than whether he can crack a few joke or give great press conferences. Brian Kerr gave a great 1st press conference

I agree that there is indeed more to a manager than having played a lot of games. However, I do not put his public speaking performance top or any where near top of that list. Did you ever hear Bob Paisley, Kenny Dalglish even Fergie in his early years.
The appointment of Stan clearly had nothing to do with insight into football. You're on the side of John Delaney and therefore against the majority of people on here, "lad"!Originally Posted by jockser

Exactly lad! i just couldnt have been bother to try explain that to some people in here though.....they want big performances at press conferences......Originally Posted by NeilMcD

No but silly remarks on boring conferences are just that....sillyOriginally Posted by Peadar

The fact you say im against the majority in here is again a bit silly "lad" isnt it.....
LOL thats just and ignoratant statement. You have no idea what Stan knows or doesnt know about coaching..... we will all just have to wait and see wont we. Your comment on him speaking at 1 word per minute is just silly againOriginally Posted by Peadar

Peader, you know well there is a major difference between speaking at a press conference and speaking to your "peers" as our new boss will be doing most of the time. I still do not agree that public speaking and being a top class manager go hand in hand. However, I do agree that the need and ability to communicate is vital, from what I have seen so far I am reasonably confident that he can do it and do it well. Time will tell of course.

I suppose you think that's acceptable, jockser Delaney, do you!Originally Posted by jockser

He had his chance to alay our fears somewhat, in the press conference yesterday but what do we get?!

I'll be waiting to see if performances pick up before I make any real judgments, but I thought the press conf was OK. Certainly no further reason for any doubts anyone may have had beforehand. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, not reading the recipe.
i dunno ....ask marco van basten.Originally Posted by Peadar

Well said sir! Lets give Staunton and his team a chance!Originally Posted by Stuttgart88

The Press Conference was just a PR formality/courtesy. It was no different to any other similar conference I've heard.

Something along those lines might have done the trick.
