Dubs RTE documentary

Looks to be a good programme for GAA fans and others.

I doubt that any club in the Eircom League has anything near as professional a set-up as was shown tonight, and I doubt even more that the full-time professionals of the Eircom League are anywhere near as dedicated or committed as the players on display either. You could see what it means to them, it means everything.

I saw only saw bits of the show but want to elaborate why GAA so professional?

I think the top eL sides a lot more professional then we think. I was pleasently surprised reading Nel Horgans Diary in the paper on preparations for last few weeks of the season.

.On what basis do you say this??I mean i know that GUFC are just as profesionnaly run and im sure the likes of Cork,Derry etc are the exact same.

It was more professional than the RTE schedule, my sky plus recording ended when the programme was supposed to end, so my viewing pleasure was cut dramatically short. I guess Tyrone won

If you think that EL clubs are as professional that's fine. That is your opinion, my opinion is that they are not.

Personally I don't think that any EL club can boast of such detailed training regimes, such a wide variety of backroom staff ranging from several coaches, advisors, motivators, doctors, physios, dieticians, experts from every field, ice-baths, etc. Even at half time there were well-known Dublin stars in the dressing room to motivate certain players. I doubt any Eircom League club has access to the kind of facilities that the Dublin team had either, or offered so many facilities etc.

I can't speak for other counties, but the Dublin set-up is top notch. I can't speak for other clubs, I can only presume, but the Dublin set up puts that of Bohs and Shels to shame. I have no idea of what the Drogheda set up is, and we have all heard about the complaints from Cork players about their facilities.

As I have said, if you think otherwise that is up to you.

Obviously eL sides lack access to some facilities & have to scroung around to rent various places but i was surprised that Cork City were as professional as i read.

I'd be surprised if any GAA sides flew to games & spent the afternoon sleeping in hotel room as preparation for average game.

ICE BATHS

The Star ran a piece about saint pats and ice baths 5 years ago.
Must EL clubs rent/hire gym training facilities so in many ways they get the best on offer. A lot of the clubs avail of the national sports campus thing in limerick - its seems standard at this stage

YAWN the GAA catch up 10 years later yawn!

Ya exactly WWS.
GUFC train in one of the best sports facilities in Ireland.They use Drom....the radisson gym....they are off to Wycome to prepare for the season and so on.
The GAA are nothing special.......have you seen some of the other "excellent" facilities used by the other counties!

Ah yes, the mention of Ice Baths and my hole argument is made redundant. You can't seriously think that Pats facilities are on par with the Dublin GAA team? I know exactly what facilities Shelbourne have, and they probably have the best in the league, and it is put to shame by what the Dubs have.

Wycome is one of many examples!......You have obviosly never seen Drom.Last year Derry,Drogheda and Harps came there.This year Shamrock Rovers are going there for a week to train.I think your the one kidding yourself mate if you think that overall the GAA are superior in their training facilities etc to the EL.

Yes of course I am fooling myself. I imagined what I saw on TV, I imagined the facilities of Bohemians and Shelbourne, and I imagined the controversy surrounding Cork's set up. There is more to the set-up than the training ground anyway.

i didn't see the documentary - but out of interest where these facilities and regimes there for the entire gaa season (from the o'byrne cup through to the allirelands) or just in the build up to a big championship match??

There did not appear to be a huge amount of facilities on the documentary.
I'd say That Guy was referring to the extent of the back room team mentors, physios, motivators around every corner, etc.
Dublin squad get into their training regieme in January, 2 1/2 sessions a week, then there are their club commitments(whatever) Then as is usual with the top players they have been given a personal training routine.
Its as close to full time as you can get.
After the Championship then club commitments are priority
Have not a clue how it compares to EL. The EL teams that I saw in their Euro games did not lack fitnesss nor did they pale by comparison. I'm just glad the ice baths came after my time

A UL study last year showed EL footballers were fitter than their gaelic or hurling equivalents.

This is to be expected given fulltime and part-time training.

It's great having that set up for 3 meaningful games a year. If they had a 35 game season to go through also they would have none of the trimmings allowed to them. I also agree with the guy who said other counties aren't as well treated by the GAA as the Dubs, hence the Cork hurlers strike 2 years ago etc etc.

For what it's worth with regard to the players giving more of a sh it you are off the mark, with all due respect. I'm great friends with players from the Ramblers squad (the lowest of the amateur set ups) and the Cork senior hurling panel (the height of professional GAA) and they all go to unbelievable lengths to perform to the highest of their ability and codes. All the hurlers have the utmost respect for the Ramblers players and their commitment to trawling all over the country week in week out for very very little reward. That respect is reciprocated by the Ramblers lads.

Eh....I know!That was my point.GUFC have not only excellent facilities to train in through out the year but as part of their preperation are off to Wycome and the Kilary adventure centre.
The GAA are great for excellent facilities etc when the big games come.I mean it would be very interesting to see a documentary on their preperations at this stage of the season....ie...non championship.
