    €60,000 compo to Walsall

[MOD EDIT: Please don't quote entire articles, and provide a source and link where available. --adam]

THE FAI will pay Walsall a paltry £60,000 in compensation to secure the services of Steve Staunton as the new Republic of Ireland manager.

The knockdown sum may be useful to the cash-strapped League One club but it's a pittance compared to the massive £8m paid by Chelsea to Spurs when they poached sporting director Frank Arnesen last summer.

FAI chief executive John Delaney travels to England this morning to tie up the remaining loose ends in the deal.

Just to be picky -said on the news this morning it was €90,000 which would be exactly STG£60,000.

€60,000 - why do we even have to pay that much, it seems that Walsall are also getting in on the act of taking easy money from the FAI. It is not like Staunton is the manager, head coach or even assistant coach. Walsall have seen the FAI coming from a long way off

It would have been a lot more if we'd got O'Neill / Hiddink.

Who knows. Staunton is loaded. He might buy out his own contract.

I don't know why they're making a big deal of £60,000 being so paltry. And whatever Chelsea paid to anyone for any reason couldn't be more irrelevant to this situation. I'm sure there's plenty of eircom League clubs that wouldn't view a £60,000 hand-out as paltry. How much did the FAI compensate Pats when Brian Kerr became underage manager?
