Great guy but please dont take the job . If it all goes wrong it could be the end of his management career before it starts.

I would pay no attention to the bookies market on this. They are more often wrong than right in when a managerial appointment is the marke.

Their goal is to make money and unless there is an insider informed flood of money on a candidate they should make a packet. I believe they have been stung by such coups in the past and therefore have to keep their antennas tuned in to market moves and interview prospects. Eirebhoy already pointed out that after the interview rumour/fact about Staunton emerged the odds went down to 4/1 against the appointment. That suggests to me that the Bookies are relaxed about Stauntons's chances.

Former Republic of Ireland international Mark Kinsella has advanced the claims of Steve Staunton for the Irish manager’s job – even revealing that he has backed his Walsall colleague at 50/1 to replace Brian Kerr!

Staunton has emerged as the bookmakers’ favourite in recent days amid reports of a meeting with the FAI’s top brass.

The Dundalk man’s lack of management experience is seen by many as a serious negative – but Kinsella feels his fellow player-coach at the Bescot Stadium would be a good choice by the Association.

He told the Irish Sun: “We have all been giving him a bit of a ribbing about it and I even put a bet on him at 50/1, but that was more out of interest than me having any inside information.

“I think he would be a good choice. He gets on well with all of the players. He was playing for Ireland recently enough so it’s not as though he doesn’t know them already.”

It seems the story in the Mirror is a load of rubbish as he hasn't heard anything:

Walsall manager Paul Merson highlighted that fact, and has made it clear he will not stand in Staunton’s way should the FAI make an approach.

“He is respected in Ireland, and I think the fans would want it,” said Merson on Sky Sports News.

“He would be a good choice by the FIA, but he hasn’t heard anything, and that’s the thing. Although we talk about it every morning because it’s in the papers.

“To be fair, I’d be one of the first to know if there was anything because it would be up to me to let him go.

“But I’d back him. Everybody who plays football would love to manage their country one day, so if it came along, then of course I’d let him go. No worries about that.”

The FAI are maintaining a deadpan line, confirming nothing more than their “process is ongoing” according to a spokesman.

Apparently Merson has given the all clear for Staunton to talk to the FAI about the job if he is approached I am beginning to get a bad feeling about this. IMO he is not a credible option at this stage in his managerial/coaching career.

I can't believe how many of you have clearly missed the point about staunton. I've watched him play ball since I was wee and he was a teenager at liverpool. geysir had it right. .the only one with the nuts to stand up to keane. A yes man? arse. yes he stood up for mick but out of conviction that it was the way forward for the team in the WC. best to get the keane thing out of the way as the damage was done.

as regards his coaching skills, if he's manager he should have someone with experience beside him but with regard to getting the most out of our 'superstars'

That's the problem you see,we always settle for second best in this country.The FAI need to get it right this time,there can be no mistakes,we need to qualify for the next tournament or we will end up going down the same road as Scotland or N.Ireland,the position should be taken by somebody with plenty of experience not somebody who's a wet weekend in the job.

At the end of the day, The FAIlure has to get someone who either is very expensive but has proved himself at the highest level or someone who has never managed before but has the potential there. A classic example would be Man citys coach, Peirce.

I think the FAIlure has decided to try the second approach since its the cheapest. If Stan does the business then it will be a fantastic swred move, if we dont qualify for Euro 2008 we will all be looking for a major clear out at merrion square.

I wouldn't put it beyond the FAI to be leaking names like Stan - he seems not to know anything about himself, so quite possibly hasn't been approached - so that when we do end up with Bryan Robson, we'll be relieved and think they've done a great job.

its all getting very worrying. all we have to date is top managers saying they're not interested
and inexperienced past players, failed epl managers and has beens (or more probably has not beens) like venebles and bobby robson being linked with the job. a bad appointment now could set us back 10 years easily. why get rid of kerr with no better alternative lined up??!

Knowing that qualification for Euro 2008 will be the only yardstick by which success is measured, Stuart Pearce or any other up and coming EPL or Championship manager is not likely to want to take this job, certainly until the draw has been made in January and then only if the financial package is one that would compensate them for being out of the club game for 2 years at least. If Stuart Pearce has any ambition of managing a national team it will be England, and he has a good chance of getting it some day if he stays in top flight club football management.

I would be surprised if Delaney and co. have not already sussed out (a) who is available (b) when they are available (c) if they want the job (d) how much they want for doing it.

Four scenarios for me:
1. no top flight manager wants the job regardless of how much
2. no top flight manager wants the job at the price FAI are willing to pay
3. a number of inexperienced managers (probably ex-Ireland internationals) prepared to use the opportunity to make their mark.
4. a 'big name high profile' failed EPL manager arrives in a blaze of glory.

As 1 and 2 are non-runners, I would consider 3 a better option than 4 and think they should just get on with and appoint someone.

Does anyone know what Staunton currently does at Walsall - what do they think of him?

Despite Holland and Germany going down the path of inexperienced former players, Ireland definitely need an experienced manager. That said I think I'd rather Staunton to Troussier.

Has anyone heard the rumours about Hiddink. His names starting to appear on a number of sites.
