Dan I told you earlier, Cathal Dervan was on the Hub last night. He was speaking to Staunton and Delaney and he said that next week there will be a press conference on Monday and that Staunton will be unveiled as Ireland manager. They told him to go onto the show and say this. I think thats as much of a done deal as possible. The only delay is to tie up a few loose ends etc.

I remember reading an interview where Staunton said that Alan Hansen made him cry on a number of occasions when he first joined Liverpool. Apparently Hansen regularly tormented youngsters who were new to the job and lacking in confidence. The idea was that it would force them out of their shell, as it seemed to do with Staunton (alternatively it could make them quit in despair ).

What I'm saying is that the FAI should have appointed Hansen as mentor/advisor - "That's absolutely terrible management, Stan. You have to say you'll be very disappointed with that sh!te." Even if it didn't work it would make for some excellent press conferences!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I dont have access to it (seeing as I live in England), but Ive been told by a mate of mine that Paul Hyland has wrote an article claiming that SS might not get the job due to media and fans pressure.

It also states that for SS to get the position he must be voted on by the 10 man committee and this looks to be uncertain

Can anyone confirm this or am I being wound up ?

Oh , and I know its been asked before but does anyone know if he DOES have the coaching qualifications for the job. Im assuming he must do, but on the other hand does he need them ? Do you need UEFA badges to coach international teams ?

The only upshot of this whole mess is that will be absolutely zero expectations for 2008 qualifiers. However bad Stan does no one will be surprised.

If I knew zero experience & no evidence of tactical ineptitude were the requirements for the Ireland job then we'd all have applied & qualified.

I've discussed this on another thread before. You are not required to have the UEFA pro licence to coach at International Level as you are in the Premier League. As far as I know Staunton does have some UEFA qualifications (possibly UEFA B or A) just not the pro licence. UEFA are in the process of trying to make this mandatory for International Coaches but run into issues with the likes of Faroe Islands, liechtenstein where the assocaition may not have a ready supply of UEFA Pro licencee's or the finances to pay one.

As a benchmark however in Europe almost all of the countires will ask their candidates to have that qualification. I'm nearly sure Voller and Rijkaard had it but not sure on Klinsmann and as far as I can remember Hughes got it while coach of Wales however he did have Eddie Nezinski (can never spell or pronounce it), current Blackburn Assistant and Former Arsenal Reserve Team coach on his staff who as far as i know is a pro licence holder. It's possible that all of these first time managers had pro-licence coaches on their staff and achieved the grade themselves during this time of their reign. International Football is probably the easiest place to get this what with having the time to complete that course inbetween national games. As far as I know, Bobby Robson has been one of the assessors on the pro-course, along with the likes of Andy Roxburgh, Guy Roux etc so that might be our experience there straight away.

That's about the size of it. as I posted earlier, they quite deliberately leaked the news to gauge public and media reaction so expect a change of heart and Venables/Rainieri/Alf Ramsay to be appointed.

It was reported that Mc Donald has the pro license.
There are enough diploma's,badges and trophies on this possible managerial team to fill the dressing room.

Maybe its old news but Staunton has parted company with Walsall so it looks like the job is his.

It's a ****ing shambles and disrespectful to all concerned.

When I did a google search for John Carver on Tuesday to see his CV it displayed who he did his coaching licences with. Sean O'Driscoll was one. Kevin Sheedy another.

Although not my first choice by a long shot for manager, I'll support Stan 100%
I suppose i'm hopeful ( rather than confident)and kinda excited about a new set up.
I think Bobby Robson will be a big help to Stan.
I'm prerared to stick my neck on the line here, but if I was to bet on Staunton being considered success or failure, I'm saying success.

    fair play nedder.

Trwaling the press online this morning I thought the UK's Telegraph summarised things best (in a wittily headlined article "Stan Must Earn his Laurels"):

Despite being his country's most-capped international with 102, his appointment, with Robson as his assistant - to be confirmed on Monday - has been greeted with more grief than glee in Ireland. Most of the criticism has been directed at the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) rather than the management team. Having sacked Brian Kerr for failing to ensure World Cup qualification, the FAI have taken three months to appoint a pair who would have been available immediately.

The general feeling is that it should have been a reverse appointment, with the inexperienced Staunton (36), player-assistant coach to Paul Merson at Walsall, learning from Robson (72), whose first stint in management was in 1968 with Fulham, a few months before Staunton was born.

As I maintain, it's not so much the quality of the appointments, which in hindsight is as good or bad as we could have expected, it's the manner of the appointments whick irks me.

I'm still grateful it's not Venables, and also O'Leary who is a self-serving spoofer of the highest order.
