Well no, Britain is the name of the island which contains England, Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Northern Ireland).

We're not really good enough to be England's rivals in a footballing sense, historically obviously England is the only country that Ireland may have a "grudge" against. Rivalry is always a mutual thing and I don't think that the feeling really is mutual from England, who probably consider Scotland and Germany to be their main rivals.

Those hooligans would (and have) run amock wherever they have been allowed to. They didn't suddenly emerge for that game.

Agreed. But the premeditated nature of this attack, in the stadium, was, shall we say borne out of a perceived 'rivalry'? (or Anti-Irish??)

I am sure that anything would get them going. Of course the C18 lads would love to give us Fenian *******s a hiding. I am sure that they would have been as eager to give the Krauts/Huns a good hiding, or the "Frog eating *******s", or "Pakis", or whoever they were playing.

There are many good natured English fans who should not be tarred with the same brush as common thugs and hooligans. These Genuine english football fans, I don't believe see Ireland as a major rival. That honour is certainly kept for the Scots and the Germans.

A lot has happened politically & economically in both countries too since 1995 and in football terms too.

The chants of "No Surrender" would sound a bit daft given the "war" is actually over.

The average English football fan saves his vitriol for Argentina & Germany, Scotland and maybe France too. By and large they're such xenophobes they think they have valid reason to hate just about everyone, especially countries they feel superior to militarily! But I think we're way off the list of teams they'd consider a rival these days. That said, if we were to play them any time soon it'd be a crime to treat the security situation as flippantly as we did in '95.
