John Fitzgerald played alongside McShane, no?

Your point remains of course (on both Painter's position & Kelly not being a centre-half)

Yeah, it was amnesia, Kelly played against Northern Ireland as a centre half, didn't look comfortable in that position.

Birmingham are to offer a new contract to defender Marcos Painter who impressed on his Premiership debut against Fulham last weekend.

Blues boss Steve Bruce confirmed a new deal will be offered to four or five of the club's promising youngsters - including Painter - in the new year.

Academy product Painter has played at centre-half for most of his career but was thrust into the left-back role against Chris Coleman's side and was not overawed.

Bruce said: "With the young lads, we get Christmas out of the way and then in January I try to tell all the young lads here who are getting contracts and those who aren't so they can get fixed up elsewhere.

"We've got Colin Doyle, who is at Millwall on loan. We've got Peter Till who is at S****horpe at loan. We've got Marcos Painter. There are four or five of the young boys who will be offered new contracts.

"We think highly of them, especially Doyle and Painter. We want to keep Painter."

Bruce added: "The left-back position has been something of a curse since I've been here with people like Martin Grainger and Stan Lazaridis injured when playing there.

"I've used 14 people at left-back in four years. Marcos is a bit of a throwback in that he will stand and fight his corner. He will get stuck in. He's tough and resilient. He had an outstanding debut against Fulham.

There have been various times right back to the summer when we have thought about giving Marcos a go but we just thought he needed to learn things but he came in and was excellent."

i read an article about him in the irish post this week. It says in an interview with him that he credits don givens with that fact that he is playing for ireland. Givens is friends with the Birmingham academy staff and they told him of his eligibility. Its also Painters mother who is irish, and not his grandmother as said earlier....although one would assume this has the possibility of making his grandmother irish as well!

Good to see that Painter appears to have taken his chance and that both he and Doyle are highly thought of. It may well be vital for them that Bruce stays as often when a new manager comes in its the youngsters who get dropped for the new signings.

When Birmingham City were being subjected to a brutal defeat at Manchester City six days ago, accusations were levelled about just how much it hurt the current incumbents of the first team shirt.

However, one person who shared the pain as acutely as Birmingham's supporters was Ireland under 19 international, Marcos Painter.

The 19-year-old was making only his second Premier-ship appearance in a Blues shirt and, following the accolades he received in the victory over Fulham, he learned about the harsh realities of Premiership life.

Nevertheless, Painter could be exempted from criticism after the Eastlands debacle as he clearly strained every last sinew in order to try and rescue a lost cause.

And there is no danger of Painter losing the common touch, despite rubbing shoulders with millionaires during his Premiership initiation.
