Don't have any figures but I wouldn't think they're paying that much. There's little enough competition for the rights. Only Setanta and TG4 were interested AFAIK.Originally Posted by pete

Far more important than regular live games, in my opinion.

There's only 38 SPL games shown live each year, we got 44. €115k is disgraceful. Shels probably got more than that from Spain for their tie with Deportivo.

But isn't it their (other stations) loss if they dont bid, there is huge potential ... its up to them to catch/miss the boat.Originally Posted by Schumi

Sure, but the lack of interest will mean that they won't be able to command large amounts of money for the rights. It was on TG4 for the first couple of years because they were the only station interested in showing it, and probably paid fúck all for the rights. Setanta presumably bid more for this year's but I doubt it amounted to much.Originally Posted by A face

Fully agree. A properly produced highlights package at a decent hour would do wonders.Originally Posted by pineapple stu
44 games shown, (of which 12? were Setanta Cup - which are not paid TV money)
So 32 games, 5 'as-live'
27x€5k & 5x€2k = €145,000 TV
Add to that: Setanta: €30k(Cork) + €30k(Longford) + €80k(Shels)
Gives you €285,000 TV for 2005 season. (Not including European Games)
This is just for the domestic competitions though. The 44 games includes Europe.
Incidentally, the figures translate (roughly) to the following amounts per head of population per season. Another way to see how far behind we are...
England - 18 euro per head
France - 10
Italy - 10
Spain - 12
Germany - 4
Turkey - 1.50
Netherlands - 5
Belgium - 3
Scotland - 2.50
Greece - 2
Austria - 1.50
Portugal - 1
Romania - 0.30
Switzerland - 0.60
Bulgaria - 0.05
Ireland - 0.03

While it is a pity that we don't get more from tv, at least we're getting tv exposure now. It's much better than 2-3 years ago. The low cost should be a plus when it comes to RTE/Setanta decidig to show live football or some imported tv programme. If we up the price, will RTE & others still bother to show our league regularly? Right now, we need the tv companies to promote our product. And a (decent) highlights package would be the best advert for the game.
