    Abbotstown Campus Announced

    From FAI Website:

The Football Association of Ireland has welcomed today’s announcement by the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, John O’Donoghue, TD, in relation to the first phase of the Abbotstown Sports Campus.

Putting in place a Headquarters and National Academy that provides training, education, competition and advisory facilities is an integral part of the Association’s plans for the development of the game and in particular the Technical Development Plan.

Welcoming today’s announcement FAI Chief Executive Officer John Delaney said, “the support for a National Coaching Centre and Academy, as well as a Headquarters for the Association at Abbotstown, further reflects Government commitment to the development of young people in sport and is a strong investment in the future of our game”.

“We will immediately engage with Campus and Stadium Ireland Development Company in progressing the development of the sports facilities at Abbotstown to meet the present and future needs of the Association”, Mr Delaney concluded.

Is this a realistic answer to the question of facilities & youth development, or is it trying to be all things to all sports & it'll be a half-baked solution to them all? I've been out of touch with this issue & would welcome informed comment.

Is Stadium Ireland still being planned / proceeded with? On what scale?

How many times has this been announced now...?

They should have moved it outside Dublin where land is cheaper as no need for it to be in greater dublin area.

Hasn't the Lansdowne Road development scuppered the immediate need for Stadium Ireland ?

I think there should be regional sports academies.
There's certainly scope for one in Munster and Connaught.

Whats John Delaney doing complimenting the government on their commitment to Irish soccer?
City definetly have the best bands playing at half-time.

Its what you have to do get more grants... Slagging off the government won't get him anymore cash.

They were discussing this on Setanta last week. Apparantly the majority of nations including the USA have contacted the Irish Olympic council about training here before the 2012 Olympics. Knowing us we'll let America have it and the Irish will train in England.

    Nothing to do with football...

The least we could do is let the yanks stopover, say maybe at Shannon...........
The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.

How funny would it be if the stadium got bombed cos the yanks were training there after all the shannon hassle?
Ya hear about the Kerryman in Al Qaeda who blew himself up by the traffic lights on a bridge in Limerick?

Said he'd had enough of the Shannon stop-over.

The Budget reduced the funding of the Landsdowne Road Redevelopment by 10 million to 20 million (for next year). Does this indicate that the planning process is already behind time and that construction work will start later than planned?

It was €30m in the estimates. Opposition parties will want it to sound like they're putting less than intended into the project but I wouldn't take anything from it.
