At a guess i'd say the USA.
This wouldn't have been that long ago either i'd say.
Anyone know who the first team to put the players name on shirts were? Been lookin for it on the net.
While I was lookin, found that
- Arsenal V Chelsea 1928 was the first to have numbers
- 1954 World Cup was the first time numbers were mandatory
- First European league to enforce names on number was Premiership 1993
- First game in England with Names was Arsenal V Wednesday League Cup 1993
Anyone know where the first name was?
The glass isn't half full or half empty it's just too damn big!
At a guess i'd say the USA.

City definetly have the best bands playing at half-time.

Sounds a bit USAish alright.
On a similair topic, I'm presuming Celtic were the last team to put numbers on their jerseys?

As far as I know the first time names were put on the backs of shirts was in the European Championships in 1992. I think Sweden and France in the opening game were the first teams to use it. As for numbers on the backs of shirts, I heard a few years ago that the GAA introduced that idea before any other sport in the world did. Think it might have been back in 1923. And its true about Celtic, they were the last team in a top flight league to put numbers on their shirts. Think that might have been back in the days of Paul McStay and co.

Dublin City? The goalkeeper's jersey they bought in Champion Sports had no number for several weeks until the fans had a whipround to get a big '1' printed on the back.Originally Posted by Dodge

I remember UCD playing AIK Stockholm in a friendly in 1999 (I think?) and we gave pretty much all our squad a run. But we had no number 17 jersey, so we took number 7 and put masking tape on it to make it 17. Lasted about five minutes!Originally Posted by Jerry The Saint
didnt we play in the US Cup in 1991 with squad names and numbers .. might have been 1992 , we played Portugal and the US and some other team

numbers on the front but no name on the back....new fai logo then too...
I remember watching some crappy local 4th division match a few years ago. One team had only 12 jerseys, so for the second substitution they took off the no.3, swapped jerseys, a bit of masking tape, and hey presto no.13. The referee (who must have been so far up his own hole) wouldn't allow it, so no sub came on.Originally Posted by pineapple stu

Only pineapple is wrong. It was the 17 jersey it was just messed up. Declan Fitzgerald was wearing it and it was the 7 of the 17 that got warped.

Italy were the other team. Packie Bonner sent off by a ref not even in the same half while the PA announcer read a few ads over the tannoy...Originally Posted by gustavo
