Niall Quinn denies Sunderland takeover

Niall Quinn last night dismissed claims that he is fronting a consortium planning a takeover bid for Sunderland.

Rumour has been rife that the former Black Cats striker was leading a group of Irish businessmen prepared to buy chairman Bob Murray's majority shareholding.

But Quinn confirmed to Sunday Sun sources in Dublin that the speculation is completely false.

"There's absolutely nothing in it," he said. "I can only think that what might have fanned the flames was the fact that I was back in Sunderland during the week.

"But that had nothing to do with the football club."
