    Lest We Forget

A whistle never made me cry, it did last Friday night
When Dave McKeon pressed to his lips, the Cross he did ignite
I’ve never experienced such elation at the Cross before
But this Friday night had everything for blow ins & hardcore
Ecstasy denotes several things from drugs to sheer delight
But the total loss of self control, last Friday felt right
Inauguration to the cause of course sows seeds of doubt.
But they were swept away in waters smothering our drought
After 12 long years of waiting, we are Champions at last.
It means so much to so many, the enormity is vast.

The Shed was heaving to the brim from 60 minutes before
When kick off did eventually come, Ireland, hear us roar
I’m usually quite vociferous when it comes to City games
Tonight it had me silent, nerves shot, arse in flames
Of course no need to worry, everything would be alright
Fenn hobbled off, Behan was on, come on lads be polite
If twas hot already in The Shed with bodies pressed together
When Joffy headed us in front, twas like a blast of sunny weather.
The melee that followed was crazy stuff, Fellas lost their friends
They ended up 10 rows below from whence they did transcend

At half time although well on top, a 2nd was required
Behan was putting his weight about, Derry lookin tired.
On the hour, Kearney struck, the roars were heard in China
Hysteria gripped my every being, I thought I had angina
The minutes they ticked slowly by, we were walking down the aisle
When Mickey saved us from The Mop, resistance was futile
The announcement made on 85, to please stay off the pitch
Was greeted with derisive roars, havin a laugh, how kitsch
I was even nervous in stoppage time, 2 up, our glory pending
But football can be very cruel, bring on our happy ending

The final shrill, madness ensued, cue the pitch invasion
All those except us in the Shed, this was our last occasion
A Hollywood script writer could not have dreamt up this
The Shed bows out, suitable style of sheer and utter bliss
The Derry boys were just first class, full of congratulations
Mick gave me a Cuban cigar to help my celebrations
There are moments from that night that will stay with me forever
City heroes everywhere, blood, guts, tireless endeavour
Hugging, kissing , squeezing tight twas like a bloody orgy
With Georgie standing on the wall singin “We love you Georgie”
"Must you tell me all your secrets when it's hard enough to love you knowing nothing."

    A fitting tribute.
And some very clever rhyming in there too!
Get it into the programme and/or fanzine early next season.
No Elvis, Beatles or the Rolling Stones
