I know this isn't coming from a Rovers supporter but it is typical of the nonsense heard from them down the years and why I really don't like Rovers. The attitude "Where would the league of Ireland be without Shamrock Rovers?". This ridiculous view that just because a team was successful years ago that they have moreof an entitlement to be in the premier division. Such cr@p. What matters is now - not what you won in the 1970s.Originally Posted by Dillo
Taking this argument to its logical conclusion maybe we should just allow Rovers into the CL each year because they have a great history.![]()

I wouldnt mind to see them go down. If they do i think they will just come striaght back up. If it wasnt for the 8 point deduction they would be in mid-table
Agree completely.Originally Posted by Derek

But where would it be? Would you like to play us in Rathbane or CHF? Simple question. I know what your money men would say.
BTW we only won 2 trophies in the 70s! But there is no view that because we were successful years ago that we have an entitlement to be in the premier. Not one fan or the trustees thinks like that. That is plain stupid and a childish reason why you dont like Rovers.
If CHF beat us in the play off we will accept it and wont bitch, moan, whinge and whine like they did last year when we ended up 13 points ahead of them.

Thanks for making my point for me.Originally Posted by NY Hoop
Its irrelevant. Our money men would love to play Manchester United as well but that ain't going to happen. Your argument is an argument for Dublin Dons. We'd love to playing Shels, Cork City and Derry but football is based on the idea of the best team plays in teh premier - not the best supported or the one with greatest history. And I would like to play Rovers in Rathbane next season and I think we will too. But doesn't this throw the argument that the premier division needs Rovers out the window? If Rovers will bring lots of fans and money to the teams they play really isn't a case that eL needs Rovers in the First Division?Originally Posted by NY Hoop

totally different situation, you can't compare the two. If we get to the play-off's and you beat us, then thats fair enough with me, but don't compare last year.Originally Posted by NY Hoop
I want them to go down - and be replaced by a team from OUTSIDE Dublin - its about time there were fewer Dub teams in the Premier IMO
Thanks for missing the point. Can you take away your hatred for Rovers and see this through? If not I'm not going to comment further.Originally Posted by LFC in Exile

Obviously you didnt read what I posted so here it is again: But there is no view that because we were successful years ago that we have an entitlement to be in the premier. Not one fan or the trustees thinks like that. I also said that if CHF beat us no arguments.
The premier needs us because we ALWAYS bring a decent crowd everywhere. Also the fact that we are in town, no matter how bad we are, brings more bodies through the gate and that is good for the premier.
Democracy rules. Put up a poll on it and we'll see the answers. The premier would be poorer if we're not in it.
Lastly the fewer Dublin teams in the premier is old. Every capital city has more clubs attached to it. CHF shouldn't be in the league though but have no problems with there being 5 capital teams out of 22.

But if we take the eL as a whole how would the eL most benefit. The first division suffers from poor crowds. Rovers in teh first would improve crowds there and would probably have a bigger impact than having them in the premier. So he premier (clubs) would benefit financially from having Rovers in it. But the first division (clubs) would benefit relatively more from having Rovers in the first. So overall, from the eL's perspective it is better to have Rovers in the First. I know that nobody at Rovers believes that because they were successful years ago that we have an entitlement to be in the premier. However, I do believe that Rovers have an over-inflated view of their importance to the league.
Of course in football democracy doesn't rule. What rules are results so even if every fan in Ireland agreed that Rovers should be in the premier that doesn't mean it will or should happen.
I could care less how many Dublin clubs are in the premier. geography is as bad as democracy as a basis for membership of the top division.
My feelings on this are affected as well by the preoccupation with the premier division by the 'larger' clubs and the league in general. In teh past Rovers fans have been as dismissive as others ofthe first division - now they can't be.![]()

There seems to be a perception around here that us Rovers fans are kicking up a fuss about the idea that we have to contest a play-off to stay in the Premier Division. At what point have any of us moaned that we are 'too good to go down' or that 'the Premier Division needs us'. Christ, you don't even hear us complaining and making excuses about the eight point deduction. No doubt if there was another club in our position you'd hear plenty of excuses relating to that.
It remains to be seen if we go down. Personally I believe we will do enough to see off the challange of either CHF or Cobh, but if not we will take our medicine, just like Harps, and any other team that has gone this way in the past. At no point has the arrogance that so many seem to be talking about crept into any discussion about our potential relegation. It stinks being here, of course, but we'll grin and bear it, and over come whatever comes our way.

Wake up. Even the fans in the first division are dismissive of it. It is a graveyard. I know I have been to first division games.Originally Posted by LFC in Exile

Eh, have a look at today's papers. Do a word count and you'll see that Rovers are in the news more than Derry or Cork on the day of the title decider. it's not just us that has "an over-inflated view of their importance to the league."Originally Posted by LFC in Exile
The reality is that we are the most famous club in the league - despite the fact that we're utter rubbish at the minute and have been for a long time.
RTÉ are even considering showing the play-off next Friday if Tuesday's result is close. No other club would be shown in a relegation play-off. And that, as some like to say, is FACT.

But I also want em to come straight back up (unless we have to do a play-off with em again!) They need a taste of 1st Division... should do em good & might buck em on the straight & narrow again.
